Need info on an exterra 30!

Hey guys, I'm wanting to step up to a minelab, and have found an older exterra 30 that was a showroom display model that I can buy for $300. I'm wondering if this is a good unit, or I should hold out and spend the extra money for a newer 305. Any information will be much appreciated.
Thanks!
Darren

With all the extra features, I would definitely go for the 305. I had the 30 for 4 years and loved it, but you will get a far more useful unit with the 305. ie noise cancel, multi tones, and being able to take the high frequency coils are all significant improvement. It also has a manual ground balance. The 30 was a fixed ground balance unit, which made it a bit less flexible if the ground you were hunting was mineralised.

I agree completely! HH Randy

Sounds like good advice! I'll hold out for the 305.
Thanks for the info!

Put a WTB ad here and you will most likely be able to get a demo or used 305 for $285 or less shipped from a sponsor.

Dollar for dollar the 305 is the best deal and is just as deep as the 505 and 705. At least that is what I've been told.

I know I really like my 305.

Tabman, excellent suggestion! I'll do that. I have one of those controversial questions now... My deepest machine is a garrett ace350 with a 10x14 excelerator coil, and in my soil, I can hit a dime at about 7 inches. Does anyone know how the depth of the 305 compares? Depth certainly isn't my main concern, but I'd really like to be able to go back to some of the areas that I have cleaned out with the ace. I'm sure there is more there, I just don't have the equipment to locate it.
Thanks again for all the help!

Darren, I have an Xterra 505 and it will give a signal on a dime at 8 inches with the 9in standard coil. Is it a signal that I would dig? Doubtful. I would probably leave this one for anyone who followed me. This is definitely at the limit in my conditions. This is a quiet signal that would be easy to miss even if it was the only signal on the sweep, only hitting maybe 50% of the time and the ID was not reliable. I would not be comfortable telling you that my 505 would offer a depth improvement over what you already have. I have never used a 305 or a 705 but based on the features of each and a lot of reading, I doubt they would either. Hopefully some others will chime in with their 305/705 experience with dime depths.
