Need some COIL advice...THANKS!

I have the stock 11" a SunRay 8"&6". These coils have found me some good stuff but no deeper than 6-7" range, and I know I really should be getting better depth than that, and I just started using Bryces settings. I'm considering a Accelerator, and thinking about the 10x12 SEF. We only have a few short weeks up here in Mi. till the ground freezes, and really would like to find a couple real deepies at my old park. What do you guys think?
Thanks, Aaron

I have the 10x12 SEF coil, but haven't got much time on it yet. If your old park is pretty clean of junk then you might want to try using manual sensitivity if you haven't tried it yet. You will definitly get more depth, but also more noise if there is some junk in the area. GL & HH.

try air test if you can get in the air you can get it in the ground, possibly no deep targets was under your coil or you keep your coil in the air to much lifted from the ground. goo d luck Stasys

I have dug down 10" and got mercs with th 11" coil you need to swing slower to get the deep targets I don't think you are going to get any deeper with the 12" coil you would need the 15" if you wanted better depth but you will loose sensitivity to smaller targets.

The SE Pro 11" stock coil will easily get a quarter at 12" but I have to say at least around here, 12" targets are rare, even older items. I dug an 1833 dime at about 5-6". Getting old targets from well-hunted sites is not about depth, it is more about technique and experience than just a new coil.

hi aaron ive got se pro and mostly use my sef 10 by 12 coil as it seems to hit better run smother then pro coil but unsure on depth not found super deep targets yet most 5 to 6 inch range but 10 by 12 sniff thru iron at old cellar hole sites amazingly and flater bottom of coil catches brush less then pro coil but now using pro coil alot to see if any depth differance old 8 inch indian unreadable found yesterday still learning my se and still testing everything to learn best ways to run this awsome detector

Hi Aaron,

I hunt almost exclusively with the 8x6 SEF coil, and find that it can hit stuff pretty well down to 8" or so. The 11" Pro is handy when there's less trash and/or more time to go slowly, but it can nail stuff down in the 10"-12" range. Depth depends on a number of factors: headphones, threshold, tones, sensitivity, soil conditions, trash, coil, sweep speed, target orientation, settings, and so on. The really deep stuff often doesn't sound much more than a whisper or slight chirp, even in the best conditions/settings, and often not in the classic tones found at more shallow depths. (But man, that quick rising 'squawk' is sweet - gives me chills when I get one that survives on the 90 degree turn).

That said, I have found stuff using the 15x12 SEF that apparently was beyond the reach of the Pro coil (or for any of the other reasons). The problem is that the larger coils make hunting in trashier areas ("signal rich") more challenging (not impossible, just more challenging). If you have a chance to try your Pro coil more this season, maybe it could still find a deep one or two. Less sensitivity actually helps sometimes, as it reduces the 'volume' of signals seen by the coil, without giving up lots of depth. Find the least trashy area of your park and see how much sensitivity the Pro coil can really handle, then work slowly into the more trashy areas. 26-28 manual is good, but 22-24 is fine too. Can also lower the iron mask down to 26 or so to help pick signals out of the iron, but you'll need to rely on the 90 degree turn more to confirm good targets from nails.

Another thing to maybe try is a 'test garden' on site. Bury a Merc or Roosie at 10" in your park and see which coil/settings pick it up best.
