Need Users advise on Omega

Have used the omega 8000 and it was the version 4 , did not have much emi problems like I have read about from others but Back issues forced me to sell a few of my detectors since I was unable to use them and had to pay some medical cost. Anyway my question is I am ready to buy another Omega as I really like it but am torn between the original 8000 or the new 8500 . Is there really that much difference in them since EMI is not a big issue with me . From what I see and read not sure the price difference is worth it for the few extra features like a back light ETC seems like their close on features . Guess what I am asking is there much depth difference between the two and things in this nature . So if you own one please state your likes and dislikes. Thanks in advance

Good question. I seldom see anything posted about the Omega since the 8500 came out. Used to be a lot of Omega posts here.

I had the Omega 8000 V6 (virtually no EMI problems) but never used the 8500. I saw a few posts about it that steered me away from it and it mainly concerns the noise it makes. It seems that there are more than a few differences between it and the 8000.

Have you ever used an F5 ? You might be interested in that one as well. I found the display of the F5 better than the 8000. The live phase readout was also a step up for me compared to the up and down bars on the 8000. It is basically the same machine in a different guise and 2 X 9V batteries instead of one. The F5 is slightly heavier than the Omega and some prefer the trigger grip.

I found the 8500 to be deeper in the deep mode (I believe it was called) then either the version 4 and 5 8000's I had. The 8500 I had, however, false'd pretty bad on heavy trash/iron laden sites. I know the 8000 versions 5 and 6 run very quietly. HH jim tn

Maybe I can help you decide if the 8500 is worth a try for you.

Like you I'm a fan of the Omega 8000. I like the ease of use of the unit and I use it with the 8" round coil most of the time.
When I heard the 8500 is going to replace the 8000 I wasn't happy. All these new features of the 8500 just not as easy to select as on the 8000.

Than I played with the Omega 8500 a while and thought it is not as hard to use for beginners as I thought. All it take is set the right hand dial to its counterclockwise position which enters Disc Mode. Than turn the detector on with the gain dial and find your highest setting without getting the unit unstable. It now acts like an Omega 8000.

All other features, which the 8500 has over the 8000 can later be learned and used. On my first test yesterday with the 8500 I liked to be able to set the Iron category to a lower volume level than the other tones, because I used disc mode with disc at 0. That way I heard all the iron, but it didn't bother me and I got a good feel for the trash in the place I hunted in. When it got dark the back-light comes in handy too, but like you red is not my favorite color for a back-light.

The new deep modes enable the 8500 to go deeper than the 8000 ever could. In ground with low or mild mineralisation the Deep settings (2 and 3) with 50 Hertz or 60 Hertz EMI filter add in-ground punch to the 8500. But yesterday I hunted in high mineralisation ground and used Deep setting one, which is the recovery speed of the Omega 8000. I was able to run sensitivity at 90 and found coins 8 inches deep in that soil in disc mode. Test in my test garden showed that the all metal mode with the new independent Gain and threshold controls of the 8500 can reach depth in my high mineralised soil the Omega 8000 can't.

The more I play with the 8500 the more I like it. Would I buy an Omega 8000, when I can have an Omega 8500 for the same price?. Nooo, because the 8500 can do everything the 8000 can plus much more.

Best regards from Germany

Andy

Thanks everyone for the replys and the info . I think I have narrowed down the two choices that I was considering just did not want to state the other choice the two are the Original 8000 Omega and the other is the Fisher F75 which I tried the other day for about 30 mins and man what a machine !

Andy, from what I can understand the 8500 has 3 deep settings (boost modes) right ? Are the differences between those settings explained in the manual ? Thanks.
