just got my Deus and took off the 11" bottom coil cover...Here's the question...do i keep the coil cover on in the field while detecting for added protection or do I operate without it? The bottom of the coil looks unfinished without the cover and hence my question!...Thanks for your input!

I would leave it on for protection. Make sure you take it off and clean any dirt that has collected under the cover.
 
Leave the coil cover on it is going to protect your coil. Also you are going to want to make sure it is on when you are charging it.
 
Use it. If you don't use it and damage your coil, the warrantee is voided. This is stated clearly in your User's Manual. And they can tell when you don't use a coil cover.
