New 10.5 DD 7.5k coil....getting better!

New member
After a poor start with the above coil/Xt70 rig on my last outing (difficulty with GBing, pinpointing, and over head power cables) this Sundays club dig was a real eye opener.

Ground balance was easier, with much lower numbers (around 60) and my 1st target was a lovely bell tone just 10 feet from the car, a bent and worn Victoria penny of 1866.

What really impressed me was in the next field. The GB numbers had risen to around 70 (meaning lower ground mineralisation than before?) but I was able to run at much increased sens (2:geek: because of the lack of junk targets. This meant I was able to get a good repeatable lock and ID numbers of 26-28 on a worn Georgian Half-penny that turned out to be 13 inches down! to say I was amazed was an understatement!

A testament to a great coil and a great detector.

I'm convenced that if you have just one coil for the X-70 or 705 it should be the 10.5 DD 7.5 kHz coil. Every coil made for the X-Terra line are great coils, don't get me wrong. But theses combination's makes for a great detector. HHTomB

I think you may be right there Sir. The blade like shape of detection also means brilliant seperation between good and junk targets. Now what I need to do is put in the hours on this combo to get a really good understanding of what its telling me.

You don't know how lucky you are to have that little mineralization. My ground reads over twice as bad resulting in half as much depth. Finally got out for the first time today (because of all the snow) with the same coil as your using and my very first find was "65" quarter at a depth of 5 3/4" which is pretty good for my ground...

I'm sorry to hear that Mtnmn, what sort of ground balance numbers do you typically see and how sensitive can you run your detector?

Clive

Usually in the mid to upper 20's, but believe the soil around here also has higher than average salinity content which compounds everything. My XT's sensitivity was never set very high at the factory, so can run it as high as I want. (It's great under power lines.) To overcome the soil issues have ordered a Safari and will see how it's FBS deals with ground conditions. Hope to get better depth as a result. It sounds like you'll do swell with your XT-705, good luck with the DD MF coil.

Thanks for that. Sounds like the salts in your soil are really playing havoc with your ground balance!

Hope your Safari can overcome this......they really are great machines.

All the best and good hunting.

Smithfire(Clive), you have an X-70 with 10.5" MF DD and got 13" on a Georgian Half-penny! I guess it must be one of these British(UK) King George(the ?) ones: http://www.coins-of-the-uk.co.uk/halfp.html

Another top coil choice is the 9" LF CC for copper and silver coin hunting especially in your low mineralized soil, and also this coil helps if there is lots of iron trash.

Hi David

Thanks for the link. Here in the good 'ol UK its pretty common to turf up Georgian and Victorian coins, unfortunately, they are often just worn flat disc's, as the one I found at 13 inches. Shame. It does prove the X-terra 70 can really cut it with the best though!

Glad you brought up the 3khz coil because that is next on my shopping list. I've heard great things about its ability on coppers at depth. I wondered if you had any anecdotal evidence of its ability on silver

I just ordered this coil....Is it harder to pinpoint with it?

Not harder, just different. I use X-ing over the pinpoint feature. You just have to imagine where the 2 invisible lines cross. With practice, you'll only need to dig a small hole to extract your target.

Clive

Im sorry i am a newb :rage:... So that means you dont you the pinpoint feature you just double cross the detector over the hit? So no more pinpoint sizing either?

Sorry DMAH, I use X-ing because I cant be bothered to switch into pinpoint (lazy huh?) and I can get a pretty good idea where to dig with this method. I 'm sure the pinpoint works fine with the big double D coil. The best way to find out what the best method for you personally is, is to practice on a test patch....you'll soon get the hang of it.

Clive

Thank you. Just got DD 7.5 today... Going outside to practice in a little bit... The stock coil is sooooo easy to pinpoint with that i can pretty much always be right on target..especially with the PS mode....hope the DD isn't to much harder....

Ok I see what you mean now by X-ing I tried it out with the new coil as the pinpoint mode seems very different with the dd. Takes some getting used to. I can not believe the depth I am getting out of the new coil. I just dug a metal carpet saddle out of a hole 18" deep. This cant be the norm.....

Thats pretty impressive!.....keep practicing your X-ing and you'll wonder why you bothered with pinpoint mode at all!:clapping:
