New 2007 Dollar Coin Info...

We all know they're out. We're all hoping they'll catch on. Looks like another loser to me, although I DO like it just a little more than the Sacka-jo-momma dollar or the Susan B. Still, it's a cheap LOOKING coin. And I'm sure that the cheap gold-colored coating will NOT hold up well, particularly at the beach. So they ought to look like a bag of smashed butt after a short time in the ground.

As I expected, they come up on the Explorer as a solid 00-29. Pics, if you haven't seen one up close yet...compared to a quarter for size.

Sure would be nice if they did catch on but doubtful. Just how many people were actually using the Sacajawea Dollar? Only the people that wanted to keep a few because it was something new. The others were spent seldom because now days, it seems everyone wants to use the Dollar Bills because they are easier to use and you don't have to worry about the weight of the coins. My Club that I am in purchase the Dollar Coins for our hunts but as far as getting any for change at stores, that I have yet to see happen and the Sac. Dollar has been out since 2000. So, I really doubt that these New Dollar Coins will catch on other than what happened at the beginning like the Sac. Dollar. But one can only hope! Look forward to getting one for the collection but that is about it. We will see in time. Thanks for the Post on this New Dollar Coin Mike and can't wait to see what everyone else thinks about this New Dollar Coin. Good Luck and HH.:detecting:

I heard there will be a new president on that coin every 3 -4 months. That makes it a collecting dollar, not a spending dollar. The only way people are going to use that coin is if they take the dollar bill out of circulation. I think the dollar bill is like the penny, it's here to stay for while. I will say one thing, at least they are changing the design of the coinage. I got a little tired of looking at Roosevelt's and Jefferson's mug all those years. Nothing against those presidents, but come on.

Oh, I agree with you, for sure. As long as the dollar bill stays, the coins will be a novelty. And I'm with you on the change to something new, though they just don't seem to be able to make them like they used to. The Standing Liberty, Walking Liberty, Barbers...THOSE were some nice coins. This stuff is garbage.

should last a while and given it's Composition: 88.5% Cu 6% ZN 3.5% MN 2% Ni.the Explorer will find them really easily. It must be the polished finish that makes it seem like it's coated with gold.

The Aussie 1 and two dollar coins Composition: 92%Copper, 6%Aluminium, 2%Nickel.

Audio wise, they sound different to each other and the Explorer sees and shows them as two differing targets, but you can almost be certain that you have found one over a majority of junk targets(certain aluminum bottle caps excepted).

The metal composition of the new US dollar coins, is quite unique and it will probably be very pronounced, when using both tone and/or visual target id of the Explorer or any other detector that is measuring the targets metal make up and letting you know that it's there, in amongst all the junk or at a depth.

What this also means and in my opinion(given that I have yet to see how the Explorer comes up on the new US dollar coin) is that at least the coin was not made out of a "nothing junk" metal, that may have shown up as a pull tab maybe( real gold Sovereigns and the like excluded ).
It's a pretty sophisticated type of alloy that I think had a lot of thought put into it, when they made them.

On another note, I recall years back in 1991, when I worked with a big Australasian vending machine company, had just engaged in a new standard and technology of coin mechanisms that used a multiple of methods to determine if the coin that was being put into the slot of the vending machines was legal tender and not a dud coin. This was mainly due to unscrupulous use of dud slug coins and other methods to gain credits from vending and games machines that used the old coin mechanisms that were only measuring and determining if a coin was made of iron or if it were round and it's weight. To an extent, they were correct in being able to do this but, unfortunately, the coin mechanisms were being easily tripped with whipper snipper cord or the electronics of the spark that modern gas lighting wands and piezzo shock generator/igniter circuits made(static electric spark in form or another). were tricking the then electronic logic , that gave credits or returned change.

My job, at one stage was to "trick" the new coin mechanisms to accept junk currency which they WILL If you know what to do.........BUT that's another story.

The newer generation coin mechanisms in the vending machines were now measuring the size, the weight, inductance and the conductivity of the coins that were put in.

I believe that there is now also some form of visual d/scrutiny
basically a miniature camera incorporated into the electronics) as well used that is used the more recent versions of coin mechanisms in many vending machines.

Given that the new US 1 dollar coins also have edge lettering , this may be what is also being observed when coin id rolled into a slot.(My theory)

So the casinos and the many other industries that rely on the public putting in some sort of currency are now sitting very pretty and very safe when it comes to counting taking and giving us currency in a form that is more conducive and safe to all..........maybe.

Looks like these New Dollars are going to be like the State Quarters Series. Mainly Collectibles! I spoke with a friend of mine a little bit ago on the phone and he got 2 of them and asked if the bank had anymore. Someone beat him to it and bought all the rest of the New Dollars ($1,000 worth). Had to be a local Coin Dealer. I also hear that there is writing on the edge of the coin also. But, I am like you, I just wish they would design a coin like the old days! Now those were nicely designed coins!!! Now days, the regular issue's tend to be BORING!!! Don't get me wrong, the back of the New Dollar Coin looks great but the front... YAWN. The Mint should have made them out of regular Clad so there could have been Silver Proofs made for them. Those are the type to collect, not the regular issue.

My personal favorite is the merc...but also love the walkers. Great looking detail & craftsmanship...We could do better than a plated coin....IMHO...TT

I think we should all do alllll we can to get the things out there and circulated. Buy all and spend all you can. That will get the things out there and LOST so we can find them. Its hell to find those paper dollars with a metal detector, so we should do what we can to fertilize the hobbie Right? I buy all the sacqs the bank tellers get in and cant recycle (no one wants them) and give them for tips, birthdays anything and try to get them out there to be Lost. Cant help but help some. Buck gotta start somewhere.
Good Luck and Thanks again
