I went out Sunday with my new 505. Question, is it better to learn with the machine on all metal mode in the beginning. I see and hear the differances in the tone on certain metals.I dug a lot of trash and a few clad penneys. Shuold i learn first on AM mode then learn the 1&2 mode for discrinate certain metals.

Congratulations. It does not really matter which one you learn in. Just dig all signals at first and you will get a feel for it.
Kind of depends on whether this is your first detector or not. If it is your first detector, you may want to run in one of the Patterns so you don't get too discouraged by digging lots of trash. If you've detected before, you know what to expect. In that case my recommendation is to run in all metal with multiple tones until you learn what tones represent each notch segment. Then, if you do want to run with some discrimination, build a Pattern to accept the target notches you want to dig and reject those you don't. By learning the tones and hunting "by ear", you will increase your time detecting and less time looking at the screen to see what number appears. JMHO HH Randy

I got my 505 the first week of Jan. this was my very first detector and first experience with ANY metal detector, after reading TONS of info and you tube videos i used the no.#3 stock discrimination pattern and multi tones, it has really worked good for me and is a VERY easy detector to learn... Digger is a plethora of Minelab knowledge and very gracious to help us noobs... Always noise cancel and ground balance before you start, the 505 is a rocking detector and with the small hi freq DD coil a tot lot SLAYER!!! have fun buddy and you'll get the hang of it in no time....

Opinions are like 'back-sides'...we all have them but, having gone through several X-terra's over the years, I highly recommend you hunt in all metal w/99 tones and dig everything until you learn what item makes what kind of sound. That's my two cents worth.
