It depends on what machines you're accustomed to, before you got the explorer. If you're not too familiar with the tooty-fluty sounds of an explorer. Because the flock-of-sick-geese sounds are hard to get used to, depending on what machines you're coming from. One trick you can do, for the short term to "break in your ears", is to notch in a tight pattern of disc. to accept only zinc pennies and up. Ie.: only the top 1/8 upper right rectangular part of your screen. Granted, you'll only find zinc, copper pennies, and quarters (or targets with conductivities that high) at first. If you do that for a day or so in a place filled with easy clad (like a junky park or whatever), you'll get your ears trained on *just* those. Then the next day, open up your pattern a little lower down, to accept perhaps square tabs and up. The day after that, lower down to accept round tabs. And so forth, and so on, lowering down to where you eventually are using the "smart screen" pre-set disc. program where you'd be using your ears to discern what you want, vs what you don't want.

When I got my first explorer, everything sounded the same. But by employing the above trick, the "lights went on" for me.

I started in factory settings at first and then quickly turned Iron mask on( set at factory 22 ). Tom is dead on about the sounds the Explorer makes. I was using a Minelab before( X-Terra70 ) and it still took alot of getting used to. I did some practice exercises in the back yard with several targets that you would normally find. Helped me get used to the sounds. You really need Andy Sabisch's book if you dont already have it. The Explorer takes some time to learn thats for sure but when you do it's like no other detector out there. Good Luck, Joe.

My first Minelab was the XS and I came from a Fisher 1266X. I was about ready to wrap the Explorer around a tree on more than one occasion. It is not the easiest machine to learn, but one of the best in my opinion. I don't really coin hunt, I relic hunt with mine. I hunt in Iron Mask mode with 2 different settings. One for trash and the other deep and maxed out. Use the factory settings and auto sens for a while, then learn to tweak it. It will make a lot of noises that can drive you nuts until you learn which are the good and bad tones. Good luck with it and I'm sure you will get some good feedback on this forum.

I'll just add that a couple of tweaks for you to make are to max out the "variability" at 10, set your threshold's tone to the level that is pleasing to you (whichever pitch your ears like), and set the threshold volume to "slightly audible but not loud."

I run manual sensitivity 22 to 26 Some of the guys run semi auto 26 with good results.

IM at 21, or 22 and hunt in IM. some use a pattern with coins and jewelry accepted.

I have issues with the Smart Screen but it is highly recommended. But I am trying to learn it

Variability 8 or 9
Gain 10
Conductive Tones I have ran in Ferrous with good results also
Deep off
Fast off
Response Normal
Contrast ?

Well that is some of em

This machine takes a while to learn then some more.
I am finally figuring it out somewhere around 150 to 200 hours.

Jeff

Happy digger about to start a new chapter :)
think I will run in
Sensitivity Semi-Automatic will play with between 22-25
IM 22
Deep on
Fast off
Conduct tones
Respones normal
Variability 10
Gain 8
and hunt out all repeatable hits in the smartfind screen mid to top right quarter of screen
