Hello all! I just joined but have been reading your posts for months now and have enjoyed them greatly, thank you. Mike and Bill sold me on the f5 and Mud you gave me a good laugh a few times now. I got snowed in the day I got my f5 more than a month ago. but me and my 2 year old daughter got out for a half hour in the back yard under my pine tree (only place not covered in snow). found two Wheaties! 56, and 56d. I had been over this spot many times with my old detector but there is just too much trash and the cheaper detector couldn't handle it. they were at 5 and 7 inches. I will add pictures of future hunts, ran out of time on this one.

Welcome! Wheaties are always nice finds. I am eager to hear how you and your sidekick find new treasures when the temperature get better.

Finally got the pictures for you. We went out again today, same spot and got another one!! my oldest coin yet. 1929 s My little buddy would use the plastic sword to poke at the ground I had to use the pick, the ground is half frozen.

Put your detecting seat belt on and hang on for the ride. The F5 will amaze you...

Welcome to the F5 world, new user here also, but haven't braved the frozen ground....

New guy here, too! I've been wanting a detector since I was a little kid, and with 50 coming on this May, I finally pulled the trigger! (I know, fast mover, right?)
Went with:
Fisher F5 with 10" coil
bought the 11" DD, too
Garret Pro Pointer
Lesche Digging tool
Good stainles steel sand scooper
Gray Ghost headsets
snap on covers to protect coils (heard this can hinder depth a bit, but not sure)
Will eventually (before the season starts) get the SunRay custom (Amish built) treasure pouch.

I'm really stuck on the pouch, though. Would like to have something with extra storage for other stuff, but have a trash pouch, zippered pocket for good finds, velcro is fine, too. Any help on this fellow F5'ers?

Thanks, and I'm really enjoying the F5 forum!

Jake

That picture is hilarious! Good to see you are practicing up and getting ready for the official start of the season!

Thanks Mudpuppy! I'm stuck up here in southern Wisconsin, and the forecast is calling for another 3-6 inches of snow this coming thursday. On the bright side, I have some exposed ground under three pine trees in the backyard, so I just might take the F5 out for it's maiden voyage tonight, just depends on the temps.

Buying a metal detector in January up here in Wisconsin, is about as torturous as buying a six year old his first bike for Christmas; can't use it for MONTHS!!!!! lol If it weren't for the reading the forums and watching YouTube videos, they would have had to commit me by now. :stretcher:

Anybody in here from Wisconsin???

I'm straight across the Lake from you in Michigan, I used to live in WI over by Lake Geneva..that was before I detected though..bummer! Theres a lot of Fisher guys in your area, maybe they will pipe up. I get over there on business every so often and hunt Oshkosh and Manitowoc a little. Well, hang in there buddy! The geese are flying north!

I'm over in Fort Atkinson, not far from Lake G! What makes you say "bummer" about having moved from here before owning a detector, are there some great areas over here? I'm brand new and have no clue where to go, especially with all of the new laws passed in this state. (you would think we were convicted felons they way Wisconsin looks at detectorists)

And to the F5 guys in Wisconsin, do as your told, PIPE UP! LOL

I have a great guy that is taking my under his wing as soon as it warms up, his name is Russ Balbirona, but he's moving at the end of June (Nevada), so I'll need a new hunting partner by then! Russ does a lot of videos on YouTube, so check him out!

Hey Mud, do you know of any areas between Milwaukee and Madison? (Fort is located about in between)

Thanks, hope to hear from you soon!

I say bummer on account of I bought a condemned home that was built in the 40's with 3 acres of land on the south side of the Lake near that military academy! I didn't have a detector at the time...so thats why I said bummer! I'd hunt Madison, it being a hippy college town if I were you. They have those music festivals and whatnot right? Hippy girls usually wear lots of silver, so key in on the high tones...I'd also be hunting along the rivers up there where everybody goes and swims and lounges around on the sandbars..especially the ones that a fellow can only get to by boat! You gotta try to be invisible doing this metal detecting in parks and sportsfields..not that you are doing anything wrong, its just good policy. Get in there early, and get out before people start moving about...you can check out Mapquest even and find some places by zooming around towns in satellite mode..i'll take a look myself for you!
Mud

All good advice, I appreciate it! I have noticed that a lot of people wear camouflage while out hunting! So, what do you during hunting season? LOL And I'm sure my F5 will be well warmed up before the sun! Hell, I'll probably sleep with the dang thing the first few weeks! LOL

Hey, theres some good looking parks and schools and churches right there in Ft Adkinson!...that old school on Harriet street has a totlot in back...Haumerson Pond Park has what looks like the remnants of an old ice rink, and an old grown over ball diamond there as well. plus theres what appears to be an abandoned road at the end that ran at a diagonal across that field...Ralph park has a good line of trees on the SE side, perfect for shade to watch a ball game from, and right there on the N side where everybody parks..Amazing what a feller can see from Space! Then I got looking...seems to me a really nice milk route would be running up 12 through Cambridge, Deerfield, Marshall and Waterloo...those are little towns I know, but sometimes nobody has hit them in a while and you can clean up! Looks like you can have your choice of hunting old silver in those towns, or hitting those new soccer fields for clad and bling! Good thing is, if you are really bored, go check a few of them out right through the snow! You probably cant dig any signals, with the ground a frozen mess, but at least you will know where the stuff is or isnt...this is a good way to explore and find hunting grounds...plan a route, then keep your eyes open for other opportunities. I always thought guys dressed in camo attracted too much attention in parks...folks either think your a perv, or on your way to a hillbilly wedding! Dress in khakis and a nice button up...sort of like a professor, you will fit right in and cause no suspicion at all! Feel free to come up with some cockamamie story if anyone asks what you are looking for (and they will) just because they asked dont mean you have to tell them the truth...even 10 years from now you can say " I just got this thing for Christmas and thought I'd try it out" more advice, dont for any reason carry a shovel or wear kneepads in public areas...just carry a screwdriver tucked up along side your arm to get your finds with for a while, if you feel you want to kneel, carry a frisbee to kneel on (you'll be finding plenty of them in the parks)....Good Luck!
