New F70 advise....

I bought the F70 about a year and a half ago. I haven't used it but maybe an hour or so...and haven't found a lot. I did not know how to navigate the settings very well. After reading alto on these forms (downtime at work), I got it out last week with my daughters and found lots of clad right in my own little back yard. When I first got it I dug several holes with nothing in them and lost confidence. I have it back now a little and want to use it on some of our land. We have approx. 1000 acres about 20 miles from town with 4 old home sites on the property. The home sites are mostly 1800's possibly very early 1900's with one of them. What settings should I use. I would love to find very old coins...etc but don't want to turn down any old relics either...maybe a silver spoon...or whatever. Thanks for the advise!

Where about's are you? I have a bit of free time on my hands and I could come and help you set the 70 up. Maybe even help you hunt a little around those old home sites. All kidding aside, I would hunt with it for several hours in the factory pre-set modes. Do you have the F 70 manual? Mud, give the man some settings. Oh, and welcome to the forum. HH jim tn

I do have the manual and have read it more than once. I understand the basics a little...just needed imput from someone with the experience behind the wheel of the F70. I am in North Central Texas. All of the old homes are gone...wood withered away. There is a cistern and a small shed/barn left at one site but it has withered and fallen in also. Thanks for any info!

I may have to stop in Memphis for an appointment at this one old park, theres a few old fellers there that need a hand hauling silver back to their trucks every 15 minutes. Yeah, What Jim says is right, hunt in the factory presets for a while...this property of yours is not going anywhere, so I can imagine if you commit yourself to learning this machine, you can hunt that for the rest of your life, getting better each time you go...the big thing is, if you try to run too hot, you will get frustrated...just begin running soft and comfortable, meaning that it dont beep unless theres metal under the coil. You will see how great this thing is and gently be able to step it up and go deeper over time...just gotta learn the language its talking, and thats a matter of time behind the coil. I guarantee if you run it soft, you WILL find something outstanding! Theres lots of old coins and whatnot shallow!
Welcome!

Thanks for the info...I will let y'all know what I come up with...and we have had the land for 44yrs. Its not going anywhere.

I've had the same issue with getting signals and then nothing in the hole. I had the same issue with another brand detector as well. The rep at the other brand told me about the halo affect and if the object moves out of its place in the ground and falls loose in the hole, the detector doesn't pick it up nearly as well compared to when the object is in it's original place. I know there are some who don't buy into the halo affect theory but it was the explanation given to me. What I do is once I dig the hole and no longer get a signal, I press the pinpoint button and move the coil slowly over the hole and that should let you know if something is actually there because the pinpoint feature puts the detector in all metal mode. I dug several holes this weekend after getting good signals and then nothing. Pressed pinpoint and sure enough, object was still there. Then I would either shovel out a bunch of dirt and scan it or use my hand held pinpointer to locate object. Hope that helps.

Thanks for the advise Ben...I am grateful that I was fortunate enough to be able to purchase the F70 as my first machine (other than a toy machine when I was a little boy). I know it will prove to be a great detector for me, I just have to get some time in with it. Confidence means everything.

Hi Dan,

If you're looking for advice on that machine, you are definitely in the right spot! These guys will have you up and running in no time, and with a little humor thrown in to boot!

I've gotta tell ya, with 1,000 acres to yourself and all that history on that land, I'm jealous!

Where at? Just curious I am near Sherman tx just north of Dallas about an hour and hunt lake texoma all the time.

Its a small world. I am in Jacksboro...but I was a Deputy Sheriff in Grayson County for about 6 years. My Mother-in- law still lives in Pottsboro.

How cool is that, I lived in Pottsboro for years, it's a great little town. Keep me posted on your finds in that spot of yours and if you have any questions I will be more than happy to help.

Lol...It just came in today, so I haven't got to use it yet. I have been using the Automax V4 that came with my MD from Kellyco, but it doesn't work very good at all. I did the mods on it and it works a lot better but according to what I read nothing beats the Garrett. One guy on here says he likes to poke around on his wife with his...lets him know if she's wearing a bra with the under wire in it pretty quick. Funny Stuff.

read the post "my F5 has landed" here in the F-series forum....funny.
