After doing some extensive research on this and other forums and websites, I have purchased a new Gamma. Lots of info on the Omega and Delta to be found but not so much on the Gamma. After reading what Dave J. and Monte have written about the Greek series in general, It seems to me that for what I am looking to do, the Gamma is the right detector. I have a Bounty Hunter Pioneer 505 that I really, really like and will continue to use. I think it is a very under rated detector and I have found many coins, a gold ring, and assorted jewelry with it. It is fantastic in my local parks and campgrounds. Here is why I purchased the Gamma. When I am in fields or open areas, I like to search in the all metals mode cause of the depth, when I get a hit,I switch to disc to see if it is a good target. More often than not, the disc mode won't go deep enough to pick up the target. I know it is deeper than 6 inches because in my soil the 505 will go that deep in disc mode. In all metal mode it almost doubles that. But I don't want to dig 6 inches or more for a possible trash target every time. With the Gamma having the ID working in both disc and all metal, plus the added possible depth from being perfectly ground balanced, my odds of identifying the target will increase. There are also some black sand ball fields in my area and I want to give them a shot with the Gamma. I pulled a quarter and a penny out of the black sand with my 505 but it was never designed for that kind of environment. Lots of falsing and very limited depth. Plus the relatively new technology that went into these Greek series detectors has me excited. Lastly, I wanted to continue to support FTP and this detector seemed to be the best in my price range, to me anyway. I am getting off this boat Friday and am looking forward to getting out and learning this new addition to the family. Happy Hunting to all.
