New Garrett AT Max perfect for me !

I've seen a few comments expressing disappointment about the new AT Max. No disappointment here. I just sold a competing brand detector and will be purchasing the AT Max and am extremely happy with what I see so far. I was struggling between getting an AT Pro or AT Gold and finally had convinced myself I was going to start with the Pro and eventually get a Gold also. This just saved me a ton of money and will give me one detector that will do what I thought I needed two for and then some. I previously had a detector that had a backlight and liked and used that feature, Garrett comes through and adds the feature. I realized after many hours of use how nice wireless would be and was considering buying the Z-Lynk to add to mine, bam Garrett added the wireless. My detector was not waterproof or able to use on saltwater beaches, yep they have that too! All metal mode, adjustable threshold, more power. All of this and barely cost more than adding wireless to an AT Pro. I don't know why so many others are complaining I think they hit a home run and will soon be outselling their AT Pro and Gold combined. The only downside I see is for Garrett's older models which now may become obsolete much faster.

Kudos and congrats to Garrett on a great new machine! I've only owned Garrett accessories until now but this one won me over and I will have one as soon as it's available.

Saw price of $722.46 through the video link. Not bad. Got my AT Pro with full warranty a month ago for $400 so I'm good to go. Waiting to see comparison with Impact.

I agree lunker,an already great detector just got even better...mines preordered...

yep, mine too. backlight, new grip and wireless built in make it worth it to me and thats not even mentioning the fact that it pretty much a combo of the pro and gold in one unit..

Are the headphones waterproof? Haven't had a chance to check the full specs.

No, Darn it.

They are not but I don't think water is very friendly to radio signals in general so no real surprise. I think to make something like that work reliably it would drive the cost way way up. Their waterproof headphones are $99.00 at full retail so with any kind of deal from there they are pretty reasonable. I will use the wireless ones for 95% of my detecting so I plan on buying some of the waterproof ones after I hunt down some clad to pay for them! :detecting:

The new AT Max has all the bells and whistles but they dropped the operating frequency from 15 kHz down to 13.6 kHz, why?
As nice as the new AT Max is I'll wait for the new Gold Max.
BTW only the 'International' model will be available in Australia (I hate being told what I need, I can work that out for myself!), which is frustrating as I much prefer my US ACE 350 over the International model and I have tried both ACE 350 versions. I like the spread of tones on the standard (US model). Truthfully we don't need more space dedicated to "iron targets" thank you very much, that is useless to anyone that coin shoots and chases jewellery (9ct + rings).
Lastly, the US price of $850. will more than double by the time I could walk out the shop door with one in OZ, so I'll save my coins for a new Gold Max.

You guys have fun in the US with your new toy!

That's where Garrett gets its improved depth increase.

Increasing the frequency lights up tiny nuggets a little bit more, but it also increases the static in highly mineralized soil and tiny metal targets. So, if you increase the frequency, you gain some, but you also lose some. Dropping the frequency should allow for a bit more depth, in moderate to higher mineralized soils.

'You said it John! I had wondered about that? And will it be a tad more 'lively' around phone masts etc?"

Hmmm, MineLab seem to run higher frequencies on their machines, so why can't Garrett and accommodate for the static by having multiple coils available like ML? What about just turning down he sensitivity to get around the static issue? Thats the cure now for the ACE 350 with DD coil, although not always, I hit a tot-lot the other night and waved the coil over the bark, not realising that under the bark was some rubber compound (granulated care tires?) even with the sensivity turned down I could not work there and had to walk away from that area. The ACE 350 did not like that rubber at all and even a few steps away it continued to chatter for a few seconds, I turned the sensitivity down and then gradually increased it to where I could work finding a nice little 925 bracelet with semi-precious stones set in it.

According to Garrett, the additional depth is going to come from increased transmit power and "enhanced electronics."
