New Laws Snowball ....

Gentleman I am newbie three months now, I am retired police officer, 22 years, one bad injury. I cannot believe the people on this forum are under attack for this hobby. You people are some of the most intelligent and mature individuals in the country! As a group I don't think the country could find a more respectful bunch for the protection of the environment, historical relics, arch sites, state and country treasures etc. I would bet my life that any find by any detectorist on this site , no matter how wonderful and valuable, would be given up freely to the state or national levels, at any request, just for the value to the historical preservation of the country. Maybe you men might only ask " Could you put found by Bill Doe with metal detector 2004"? I for one am researcing this NJ law stuff and will start writing and doing any thing I can to help out. They pass one of these bills and the snowball effect could be disastrous.
PS. I have met two detectorists so far in my short 3 months. One, 55 yr old retired state supervisor of curators Wyoming Historical, sites, second, 58 yr old retired military full bird Col. Weapons engineers,Utah military installation. These people are not what the N.J. law indirectly suggests! <img src="/metal/html/angry.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":mad">

Agreed Joseph. The NJ law could set the precedent for laws like it across the country. Everyone here is encouraged to speak out and write their politicians. I am a member of the union trades and know first hand that if we don't stick together, they will pick us off state by state.
Take care,
Todd

Think about this. Just because it isn't in your state doesn't mean it won't be.
"They came first for the communists,
and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a communist.
Then they came for the Jews,
and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Jew.
Then they came for the trade unionists,
but I didn't speak up because I was not a trade unionist.
Then they came for the Catholics,
and I didn't speak up because I was a Protestant.
Then they came for me,
and by that time nobody was left to speak up."

i have a feeling we as a group are doomed. sooner or later each state one by one will consider us criminals or at the very least personas non gratis. if you do any beach hunting, you must have heard that we are scrounges and trying to gain by someone else's loss. last year, i personally removed 13 used hypodermic needles from seaside heights beaches. i never asked for thanks. i just didnt want someone's kid to step on one and possibly become infected. the abuse that we are taking is getting more and more common anymore. without a national organization, we will never get our message out. the manufacturers are sitting on their hands and doing nothing to promote the good points of our hobby. how many of you have read what has happened in new jersey and thought better them than me. well friends, you are next. the emails that i sent to the governor and senator buono are still unanswered.

Elevatorguy, One thing I know that has to be done is ladies/moms and children need to get into this hobby at a fast rate. My 11 yr old is doing his research project in science concerning metal detecting, the kids love the demonstrations and really delved into frequencies etc. We could really use some children hitting big finds and doing the right thing etc. I agree with all you guys..just hope we can make headway sooner or later. joe

I have attempted to donate finds (more than once) to the local historical societies and they don't even extend me the simple curtesy of responding. I also offered to assemble a volunteer team of local detectorists to assist a state historical agency, they were crying in the newspaper about an historic farm house that was being bulldozed and paved over to build a hotel and they were given scant time to recover and preserve any artifacts. I guess they would rather that stuff be squashed and paved because again they didn't even respond to my offer.
Personally I would have so much fun assisting local archeologists on a volunteer basis. They can keep the finds and yes, a small note that said "recovered by..." would be all the fame and glory I would need to keep me coming back.
Unfortunately its like talking to a closed door, but I'll keep knocking.
