New Minelab - GPX 4000

Hi,

I've got about a days use in on the GPX-4000. Minelab claims in their literature that this is a new unit. That is no lie. The GPX-4000 is no GP 3500 with an LCD screen. It has taken the GP series digital, with the biggest difference from a practical standpoint being in the audio. The machine sounds totally different than previous units. The only way I can desribe it is to say it sounds like other digital based detectors on themarket as opposed to an analog unit. The threshold is smoother, and the sounds purer. As is usual some old-timers will find the change rather jarring. I know I did and it will take some getting used to the new sounds.

There is also more to fiddle with in the way of controls, and so although the factory presets do a good job of just getting a person up and running, actually learning what al the controls really do and how they affect the performance of the unit under different conditions is going to take some time and study.

Hi George,

I was starting to wonder! New digitally processed programmable PI unit with saved settings memory... you would think would be a subject for a PI technology forum.

Going digital has given us units like the Ace units and X-Terra series where lots of power is getting packed in tiny boxes. I'm hoping a shift to digital in PI units will lead to similar miniaturization eventually.
