I have been detecting with the Explorer II for 3 weeks now, after years of using a DFX, and then an MXT, and am finding a lot of coins in areas I had gone over more than once with the other machine. I am happy about that, needless to say.
My question is as follows. I have been investigating a lot of deep signals that are iffy silver. I suspect some of these are hot rocks? Other times, I cannot pinpoint any kind of a signal to dig on. I have repeatedly been getting these signals. Could these also possibly be hot rocks?
I run the gain between 15 any 20. I run very little iron masking.

you must mean your sensitivity and yes they could be good signals depending on how the rest of the machine is set up

but i think if you don't have your gain cranked up, you won't be able to pinpoint something deep.
once you have some more experience with the explorer, you'll know for sure a deep silver from anything else.
agree with Leonard, you must be talking sensitivity between 15-20, gain only goes to 10.
enjoy that explorer. <img src="/metal/html/glasses.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":geek:">

I always start with my sensitivity in manual at 32 and work down if I have to. <img src="/metal/html/wink.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=";)">
You would be amazed at what we find by using that method. <img src="/metal/html/grin.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":grin">
Last week I dug up a 1600 year old Saxon horse shoe from 2.5 feet deep. <img src="/metal/html/wink.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=";)">
I only tell you this to prove the point we have to get down to the finds and there is no other detector which does it better than the Explorer. <img src="/metal/html/smile.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":)"> Jerry.

Yes, sorry, I meant to say sensitivity, rather than gain.
These are my settings:
volume-10
gain-7
variability-10
limits-10
sounds-conduct
response-normal
recover-both fast and deep at the same time
I use very little discrimination. Does this sound right to you guys? I have dug up some wheat pennies at 8+" in hunted out areas, but no silver, yet.

i use variability 8, silver sounds better to me that way. <img src="/metal/html/wink.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=";)">
and i use gain 10 exclusively.
and fast off, unless i'm in heavy trash. and i switch to my tornado pattern too, (coin pattern), in heavy trash. that pattern picks up relics too, except for iron relics.

I didn't see in any of the replies about doing a Noise Cancel when you fire up the Machine. <img src="/metal/html/confused.gif" border=0 width=15 height=22 alt=":?"> Even if you are hunting the same ole places, their could be some difference in the Ground condition.
Electrical interferance, someone nearby using a Cell phone or a CB radio. I do this every time I turn the Detector on, it only takes 20 sec or so and then you can make any or all adjustments to fit the site.
Just a thought.
