Found this last fall.....decided to try cleaning it up a little yesterday and found a date on the bottom..1830 or 1839? And it's starting to look like silver..??

If you google "miraculous medal" you'll find the story behind that medal. The date 1830 is the date when the design of the medal was received in a vision by St. Catherine Laboure. Nice find.

Yes ! Way Cool !

Ok...so it's not neccesarily that old. That's good to know. I thought 1830 was a bit early for this neck of the woods. Although I did find an 1865 2-cent coin up here last fall. Thanks guys.

Bryce...my Explorer read it as an Indian Head penny....fer/cond 7-26. Maybe silver-plated?

[size=large]looks to be 1839.

I am being told that it is likely aluminum or something called "pot metal"....which to me sounds like some genre of music...lol. Either way it's one of my favorite finds now !

Sure does have the sheen of silver, good find regardless of it's composition.

Pot metal normally will blister if its been in the ground very long and that coating peals. Both aluminum and pot metal does have that look where the dirt sticks and begins the corrosion process.... but have it check out.

It is aluminum...small rectangular or "rectangular-ish" pieces of aluminum act like indian heads...
I've found a few of those medals...It's probably pretty light-weight...when in doubt, feel its weight...
& if it's plated it should also be heavier...
Rectangular tabs can read & sound like indian heads too...
& little rectangular pieces of aluminum siding, etc...
