I'm a new member and really enjoy the high level of knowledge I see here. I just got my first new detector since my mid 80's Compass. Yes, my Omega arrived last night and all I had time to do was put it together and do a few quick passes across my front yard. I welcome any suggestions for getting up to speed as fast as possible.


BTW, I am the project archaeologist on the pirate ship WHYDAH, wrecked in 1717 on Cape Cod..

Turn the sen to 60 ,all-metal,balance machine .Turn disc off all-metal just to it clicks ,Grab-a-hold and hang on it is a coin monster.Enjoy the new machine u have a good 1.
 
Thanks Canman, I'll give that a shot as soon as I get home from work. I told a guy I work with about getting a detector and he said I should check out his parent's house with 40 acres, built in 1690! As soon as I feel comfortable with the 8000 you know where I'll be heading.

Whydahdiver congratulations on getting a new Omega 8000,you have spent money WISELY.This Omegs will find you many coins just give your self time to learn the tones and what its trying to tell you.Dont get discouraged just keep going out and using it for its very simple to set up and very light.I have had mine now for a few months and im still learning things about it but i can tell you this it has never Once brought me back home empty.Yes there have been a few times when i only had so much time to hunt that it may have only been a few coins but many times you will find several.The Omega seems to be a coin magnet it loves dimes and pennies and for some reason does very well for me on nickles,yes they are a little harder to find but they usually have a consistent 56 to 57 number no matter what direction you swing and i truly like the 3rd and 4th tone on the Omega.In Illinois mine will groung balance in the 50s most times and i usually hunt with disc at 16 and sensativity any where from 70 to 85 depending on any intervierance.Personally i have used all three coils and i need to use the 5 inch more but of the three and a lot will disagree with me here but i prefer the standard eliptical coil, for some reason it just works for me better.It pinpoints excellent and is wel balanced and it seems to discriminate better at least for me.You will read all the talk on the 11inch dd coil how great and wonderful it is and im sure it is fine but i have used it several times and yes i like it but of the three its the std concentric elliptical that works best.I will get some flack on that im sure lol...The best of luck to YOU with your new Teknetics Omega 8000.If any questions feel free to ask them here for there are some experts on here that can help and explain things better then me.Just enjoy it and have fun and those high pitch tones will soon be singing alerting you to your next coin.....Markmac
 
whydah-Congrats on a great detector! I have had my Omega 8000 for maybe 6 - 8 weeks now, and I am learning something from it every time I use it. I didn't have the money to get a Minelab ETrac and after reading this forum for awhile and reading and watching other peoples' reviews on the O8K, I decided that this is the perfect machine for me (or at least bang for the buck) out on the marketplace right now, IMO.

Let us know how it goes, and be sure to be posting pictures of your "goodies!"
 
Bubba: I intend to spend some serious time this weekend with my Omega. I've only managed to use it a few minutes so far and boy is it different from my last detector, the old Compass. I have noticed how "active" it is when I turn up the sensitivity, I've got to figure out the ground balance and all the other stuff it does since I've been away from detecting so long. I've got acres of open fields near my house and a couple of houses from the late 1600's in addition to a poor house from the late 1700's waiting for me so the incentive to learn is sure strong.

Whydah, a couple of things that I have learned is 1)turn up the SENS nob as high as you can, all the way up if you can do it without it being too "wacky" (or erratic jumping around) and 2)make sure the unit is ground balanced right (which on the Omega is the easiest I have ever seen---jump grab and go!)

This is the right forum to "learn" about your machine from others!
