Hello folks- i'm a new poster who's recently taken back up this great hobby after a hiatus of several years and I'm considering upgrading to the MXT. For some reason the urge to treasure hunt struck me over the winter, so i pulled out my old White's Silver Eagle and attempted to fire it up- well, no go! I shipped it off and got it fixed (capacitor had gone bad), and found some old home sites in the backwoods of West Virginia to detect. One trip yielded a standing liberty quarter (date obliterated), and a very brief trip to a 2nd site gave up a 1929 mercury dime.
Neither of these coins was particularly deep in the ground, the areas i found them in were wooded and the coins only a couple inches down. From past experience i know i can expect to dig pennies/dimes at a maximum depth of perhaps 5 to 6 inches- maybe an additional inch on quarters. So, the question is, how much better performance could i expect to achieve with the MXT? Is it THAT much better than the older White's model that i'm currently using?
Thanks for all input/opinions, it would be nice to have a new machine but i don't want to make that leap without some advice!

Mike,
Welcome to a fantastic forum. The guys here are not only friendly but knowledgeable.
I won't bore you with my lack of knowledge since I have only been detecting for a little over a year and have only used the MXT. What I can tell you is that it is a "user friendly" machine with little to no learning curve.
I am sure others will post giving you more details but feel free to use the excellent search engine at the top of the forum page to query on items of interest. Make sure you take the dates back over a year.
You won't go wrong with the MXT on performance.
HH and welcome back,
Johnny B

Welcome to a great fourm here with many wonderfull people to help you.
I have used many differnt detectors over my 31 year, but never used a Whites Silver Eagle, but many other Whites and find the MXT the best Whites I have used and it has the depth and user freindly unlike some of the higher end Whites. I would not be a afraid to say the MXT is probably the hottest selling Whites detector right now.
Up here in ND I we seem to use the Little Mini Shooter coil 4X6 and the 6X10 coil the most on our MXT and have dug some deep coins and some very good target ID too on some of the deep ones. The MXT has realy put the fun back into detecting and was a well thought out detector that is easy to use.
If you have any questions this is the place to ask them.
Rick

I didnt own a silver eagle, but did use a spectrum for 10 years. In the ground I hunt in Indiana& michigan my mxt goes 50% deeper somretimes more.

Welcome Mike
The mxt blow it away. With the stock coil I have got nickels at 8 inches. I have a 14 inch excellerator coil that has gotten 9 inch dimes.
From what I read those old whites were the stuff in there day, But in this age the MXT rules. It is very versatile and a deep seeker. I have a 5 inch excellerator coil that will sound off good on a six inch wheat penny. So yes the mxt is that good. Of corse none of us here are biased to the MXT <img src="/metal/html/lol.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":lol">

Johnny B, thanks for the tip on the search engine and for the welcome.

Ray, thanks for that info- it's amazing how much technology can evolve in a mere 10 years. I'm pretty comfortable using the Silver Eagle, and it's a fine piece of equipment- but it kills me knowing that i'm passing over items that are simply too deep for me to pick up on. I think an MXT is in my future somewhere!

Thanks very much Rick- from what i've read on this forum the MXT is a great machine. My older White's has served me well, but those extra 2 or 3 inches mean alot- my oldest coin finds have been at the outer limit of what the Silver Eagle could accomplish, probably there was more that i simply couldn't reach.

Wow, now THAT's what i'm talking about! Thanks for the info Bill.

Welcome back to the hobby Mike, and welcome to the forum. I can't attest to the Silver Eagle, as the MXT is my first White's machine. However, over the past 30 years I have owned more than my share of Garretts, Tesoros, Fishers and Minelabs. I will say that for the type of hunting I do, I am very impressed with the MXT and consider it my primary machine. It is an excellent choice for the type of hunting you describe and will nearly double the depth capabilites of your Eagle. Dimes at 10 inches and a quarter at 12 would not surprise me a bit. HH

Its very hard to find a used MXT.
Thats how good they are.
Everybody on the forum are great people and they will give you alot of info.
Get out and have fun
Good luck.
