This is my second year at metal detecting. My first year was with a bounty hunter quick draw II. I sold it to my dad in Dec. Then i hit the research for about 2 months, 2 hours a night. If i had the money i would of got the ExII. With work and the weather in South Dakota, i have only been out twice. The first time i went out, i got frustrated. The second time i went, it was better. I went to a newer park that was built in the late 50's or early 60's so there was potental of silver, but i decided not to dig anything under 6 in. If i knew how to post photos i would. I did find $ 2.43 cents in 2 hrs, and i also found a silver whale tail charm of a necklace and the usual pull tabs and aluminum peices. The pinpointing wasn't that hard because i have been reading the forums. One question i do have, is how small of a gold nugget will it pick up? I want to say thanks to all the people on the forums, you really have helped me out.

Gold jewelry is a different story. If I were going gold prospecting I would chose a different type of machine, such as a Tesoro Lobo, Gold bug, GoldStrike, MXT etc.
The Quattro is great on gold jewelry, but does have it's problems hitting on gold chains because of the size I reckon. I've only got about 25 or so hours on my Quattro, so hopefully Mike in Virginia Will jump in.

I'll be glad to jump in but afraid not much help here. I've never found a gold nugget. Probably in no small part due to the fact that I've never LOOKED for a gold nugget. But I would say that the Quattro or any other Minelab should be able to pick up any GOOD sized gold nugget. Not some of the small stuff that gold hunters find, but should be no problem with pieces maybe pea-sized and up. I know I've found little lead pistol balls, shotgun shot, and small gold earrings, so I would think it would do well on anything with any size/weight to it. 
Thank you guy's and gal's for all the info i have received on this forum the last two month's. Thanks to you tips and info, i was almost able to pick up the Quattro and find the good stuff without to much headache. I'm still not used to the threshold yet. I just don't understand why you want a humming in the background.

If you're cruising along with a non-threshold machine, one that either "hits" on a target or doesn't, and you narrowly miss a deep silver target or some other deep target, you MISS it. With a Minelab machine running a threshold, that "near miss" will often result in the threshold being "broken" briefly. That's your cue to stop and take a closer look. When you go back and re-sweep that area a little closer and from a different angle, that simple break in the threshold often becomes a good signal. It can make the difference between just getting the shallower newer stuff and being able to get the older deeper stuff.
