New SE - Dumb question no 1

I don't understand Iron Mask when the same area is blacked out by a discrim pattern. What is gained? (lost?).

Architex,

A discriminated or non discriminated SMARTSCREEN pattern is far more flexible and CAN be edited within an an area of the desired discrimination. You create this within or outside an incremented blacked area out a typical IRONMASK screen.

You can actually remove or add areas that are to be blanked out on any part of the SAMRTSCREEN and also program the detector to accept or reject inside or outside and anywhere on that SMARTSCREEN.

So if you were to black out an area that looked similar to what IRONMASK allows you to black out, you could still include or exclude a target type anywhere within, outside or near a created SMARTFIND pattern

An IRONMASK pattern is incapable of being edited within the areas it has blacked out. It only gets increased or decreased in the amount of blacking out(or increased nulling out of iron)it can do.
When you use a All Metal(AM)on EX SE or -16 on an EX XS/2, setting ,with SOUNDS FERROUS, you can usually here the iron as you pass over it and if you set IRONMASK to a low low tone, then higher tones near or under iron can sometimes be heard as the higher tones.

I hope this makes sense and more importantly I hope I got it right.

Hard Nosed Dave

OK, I'm beginning to get a clue. Thanks.

Great answer hard nose, but can you explain in a less complex term.most of us like my self wish you were here to explain. Thanks

When you use the Explorer with IRONMASK it is one type of detector.

When you use it with a SMARTCREEN it is another type of detector.

Bingo...........I thought I figured that out today, thanks. My confusion was thinking that you used IM with the smartscreen which may already have iron blacked out.

O.K. I'll try...I'm only going on my third month with the SE so take it for what it's worth...When you turn on Iron mask you can black out the entire screen by scrolling it to the far right...this in effect will eliminate ALL signals...The further to the left you scroll the more metals you allow to be signaled on...this is one way you can discriminate out unwanted signals...you can also create your own smartscreen where you can accept only the targets you want to beep... kind of like the factory preset smartfind...I have not tried to create any patterns yet so I can't help you there....but when you are in the smartfind screen, ANY area that is blacked out, you will not get a response from the detector...It really sounds like you need to sit down with your detector & manual & try to get to know it a little better. Don't be afraid to "PLAY" with it. You can always go back to the factory preset by pressing the on button & holding it there until the unit starts up...HH...TT

-16 gives you the whole spectrum ferrous and non ferrous but is a noisy unit as it picks up all..Should get more depth, experienced operator should hear a good target next to junk and of course relic hunters do dig ferrous targets..
-10 should allow you to pick up most non-ferrous and probably the way to go for relative newbies but some experienced operators use this setting and do well.
Nice post Dave and keep them coming....
