New to bottle digging/shall I dig?

Hello all,

I have been metal detecting on a plowed field and one spot has old bottle fragments. They cover about a 30 square feet area. The plow does not go any deeper then 12-15inches and I was wondering if it was worth digging. I don't know really how to start, should I probe or just start digging right in the middle. I have never dug for bottles before and not sure how to begin. I know from the history of the area that these bottle were deposited in the mid 1800's and was wondering back then if they (military) just threw them in a pile or dug a hole and threw them in. Any ideas would be helpful.
thanks

most likely thay thru them in the prive pit and if you probe you should be able to find it easy enough, you should get some reading on a detector to in all metel mode
as there should be some metal cans or pans in it too
