New to Metal Detecting, any tips on where to hunt in Iowa?

I've taken my Gamma 6000 out a couple of times for a few hours so far. We have found a dozen or so wheat pennies and other clad coins. I live in Cedar Rapids, IA. Does anyone have any tips on where there would be good hunting in this area? Does anyone have luck in farm fields? Thanks so much!

Farm fields are nice, here is a link http://www.igsb.uiowa.edu/nrgislibx/ pick your county, not much time left before crops get in, you can still look for old house's that may not be there anymore? HH or http://www.iowagis.org/geoportal/catalog/main/home.page

Great thank you for the information! Once you find a potential site do you try to find the landowners to get permission? Also, if no homes in site anymore, does anyone care for the most part?

Yes , ALWAYS get permission first unless you own it, not a good feeling having a MAD land owner in your face, perhaps even legal action! Did you find the historic photo's of your area?

See if your states historical society has PLAT maps, this was a big score for me here in Kansas, They scanned alot of them and every county is listed, these show where schools and churches were located as well as a ton of cool information, Here is the link for KSHS so you can see what I am talking about Kansas PLAT Maps Site good luck and HH...

Awesome. Thank you so much for your time and the information! I'm going to research all of this over the next few days. I haven't had a chance to look at much of it yet. Such good ideas and HH to you as well! I'm so excited to be able to hunt this year, so much fun even if it's old junk we dig.
