New to the AT PRo

Hello everyone, I am new to the AT, not new to detecting at all, I have years of experience, I have been using the Fisher F70 and switched to the AT per MUD's suggestion. I plan on hunting freshwater beaches I am thinking Pro Zero iron around 30-35 with audio on. My question is how does that setup sound to the experienced AT users? I after beach gold and I will dig everything. Also do gold rings usually stay solid on the ID? Do things bounce around in the numbers? I am used to trashy items bouncing around, is that true with the AT? Thanks everyone.

My question is how does that setup sound to the experienced AT users?

Answer- Well, the owners manual suggests running with the iron auto off. Then when you hit something that sounds promising then turn it back on. The gold rings don't bounce around a lot. Example if your target comes in at 62-64, that's not a lot of bounce.

The other question is do the trash items bounce all around?

That is one of the reasons they tell you to run with the iron audio off, you would hear so many iron grunts you may miss a good target.

You should read the owners manual again before you order. A lot of good info in there Mike. You can down load it at your detector dealers web site for free.

I am just like you, I am waiting on my detector to come in. They were out of them so I am on a waiting list. While I have no particle experience I have read enough to know the equipment vary well.

If I have made any mistakes in my explanations to Mike I would ask the more experienced detectorist to please correct me.

I hope this helps Mike

I also suppose that may depend on the soil conditions and trash.

I mostly hunt fresh water beaches myself. I also have a buddy that uses the same machine and he hunts beaches too. He's found a lot more than me, but he's had his longer also. We both run iron disc to 40, and he never uses iron audio, but I do. I have not found any gold with mine yet, but he's found about 5 rings. He said they are always a solid number, maybe a 2 number jump. And yes, the trash is always a jumpy #, or the iron audio will grunt at you. And I got this detector around March 1.
There's a lot of knowledge on this forum, and in this group especially. I'm sure someone that knows a lot more than me will chime in and give you some pointers.
Good luck!

I didnt tell you to switch! I told you to keep them both! You have found a great pile of gold with the 70, paid it off, and you will find a big heap of it with the Pro!

They are truly Brothers from different Mothers...they make one heck of a team! The pair makes a fellow better with both rigs and I'm not kidding!....aside from all this, for what you do and where you are at, and what you hunt, (gold/silver jewelry and coins, beach and water) the Pro is the right tool for that job, and what I exclusively use it for! Pro zero, 40 disc, iron audio off, 3 clicks down from top sens...thats the ticket for beach and water gold! ..never once have ground balanced either..dont know why, generally I start in the dark, so I mash the power on button, push the disc button and count to "10", and swing away...the sens settings and iron off are stored in the Pros memory, but for some reason, a guy has to set the disc upon power up...I dont think I've ever touched any of the other buttons besides power on, and disc...never once pinpointed either....('course, we are talking sand, so its not really necessary)..one thing that IS necessary is a good scoop..

Full disclosure: (I am a poor example to pattern regarding settings and machine set up knowledge and all that..I just turn the thing on and go). Pro hits freshwater gold hard and deep, you will soon see..this is gonna be a great year!:clapping:
Mud.

Oh, 'nother thing, when you guys get your rigs, just remove and throw away the camlocks, both of them, take a file and smooth up that lower fibre shaft, where it has some raised rings on it by the spring detent button..file 'em right off and slick it up with some 300 grit sandpaper..takes about 5 minutes tops..you can thank me later...(I know neither of you will do this until about a year from now, and then you will say, "damn, shoulda listened"..and that will be after you break your rig with Channellocks...you just remember I told ya!) Am I right boys?

Lol your right you didn't tell me to switch, I just got the impression I should

Well, you know what you are doing, about locations and gold, that F70 taught you a lot, you proved that, and you have the gold fever, so now you got the rig for your your medicine, rain or shine...

That's exactly why I wanted the AT , plus those boat rides to those spots that I go to. The AT give me piece of mind that I won't have to worry. I am really looking forward to its arrival, so I can begin to learn it, and I didn't really have the money to keep both machines, and my CPA said there was no reason for me to own two machines anyway, because I could only swing one at a time. Which seemed to be a valid statement to me until I looked into that closet FULL of shoes, but that is another story all together.

Guess I will have to reset my gold totals now got a new machine to pay for, the F70 paid for its self 2.5 times in about a year. I plan on beating that with the AT!

Mud, I just got me a scoop Saturday, but I did so because I'm going to the Tx. coast next month. It's the kind that's curved and you can kick it in the sand. Is that one like you use? I never thought aboutr getting in the water here where I live, because the lake is at an all time low.
And I'm going to look into this shaft mod. SO you don't need the camlocks at all? I know I don't like messing with them cause I always forget which way to turn them, lol

PRO mode, Zero disc., Iron audio off is how I hunt. Why zero disc. you might ask...well I like to hear everything. I would say you are safe with it set at 30 - 35 disc. but don't make the mistake of going to 40. I made a video awhile back of VDI numbers with the AT-PRO. I think the whole video is informative for new AT users...but if you want to see why NOT to set it at 40 disc. then jump to 4:30 in the video. Everything tested in the video was found by one of my AT-Pro's...love them!!

Hope this helps.

That's a great video! Thanks I figured that the smaller gold would hit into the iron range. Does anyone know where the chains hit? I understand the are bad signals, bounce around. Just curious what experiences y'all might have had.

Hi Ayeti65

I run mine the same way as Diggin-it does. What I found (personally) is the deeper the targets, the lower the tones with mixed metal objects. When you notch out, you are most definitely missing the deep ones. Their are variables, but over all, anything deeper than 8", you will leave behind which is o.k. for me if you live in my area. :)

I won't be notching out anything, I learned that lesson with the F70 the big gold hits into those pesky pulltab numbers so, bad as I hate to say it, you gotta dig those too, if you want the big gold.

Got out for about an hour with the new AT PRO, gotta say the speaker is a little to quiet. The machine runs very stable, I need to learn the TID numbers for the items. I found a few coins, and dug several bottle caps, I guess my ear isnt tuned to the audio on the machine that would let me know it has the iron in it. With time I think this will be a very good machine.

The TIDS and Tones do not exactly duplicate what you are used to...you may find it helpful to dig it all for a while, and try not to look at the TIDS except for a brief glance. The quicker you can get your EARS accustomed to it, the better you will like it...its not as surgical as what you had, but it slap kills gold, especially chains...stay with it and hunt it hard, after a couple thousand targets you will have it mastered.. Heres a shot of what it took to unfreeze the shafts from a years worth of fresh water hunting...I had to pound out the lower rod with a hammer and dowel from the silt jamming everything up, and making adjusting shaft length impossible. For a water hunter, this is a must do, the sooner the better. It works great for water hunting without the camlocks, its easier to change the batteries, and a guy can collapse the lower shaft for travel using the detent buttons quickly and easily.

I know the TID numbers won't match, but I like to know what I should "expect" when I get a tone. I know it's silly I still dig everything, just a game I play I guess while I am out. Lol
