New to the M6 - Any tips?

Hey all,

I just got a good deal on a used but like new M6 with the extra 10x6 DD and 5.3 coil. Just started detecting a year ago and have been doing so with a Silver uMax. The uMax served me well, but I was ready to upgrade. Just curious as to if anyone has tips for me before I get out there with it. It should arrive within a week or so and I'm excited to get out there! Thanks!

Start with the presets and work up from there as you get a feel for it. The 6X!0 gives good coverage, decent depth and separates in trashy areas pretty well. The 5.3 does a good job in the trash as well and is great to swing. Have fun.

Thanks BarberBill. I normally hunt parks and older houses looking for coins. Which out of the stock coil, 6x10, and 5.3 would be the best coil to go with for these types of situations?

Boy, that's sort of a ford or chevrolet the best sort of question. Many, myself included, use the 6X10 as a most used coil partly because it has a bit more coverage in the long dimension, but many would disagree due to the fact that 5.3 has as good or slightly more depth and maybe a slight edge in trash. Personal preference, both will handle that sort of detecting well. The 5.3 may fit in tight places a bit better and is maybe a bit lighter to swing, but either will work pretty darn well IMHO.

I pretty much leave a small coil on my m6 all the time, unless you're in a field or such. Small coil on the M6 is a killer in the trash!!!! BTW I use a 6" DD Excelerator coil WOW

Thanks for the tips guys! M6 should be here tomorrow. Probably head to some of my older properties I have permission to hunt and use the 5.3 and then maybe some parks with the 10x6 or stock coil.

have tried all your coils in a variety of sites, made some good finds, and then feel comfortable about having one of the best-value detectors on the market.

The only suggestions I have for you are these:

Run the Sensitivity as high as possible w/o chatter.

Set the Discrimination level as low as you can tolerate. I seldom use more than only barely rejecting an iron nail laying on the ground.

Do not get carried away and sweep too quickly as that can impair performance.

Tinker with your PWC's and then you'll know when you might want to use them. (PWC = Paper Weight Coils. The ones you can leave home on the den desk or someplace.)

I am sure that by the time you spend 1-2 hours of equal time hunting typical sites, the 6

Hey Monte, thanks for the tips. I took it out for a quick test run today and it worked pretty well with the stock coil at a local park. Plan on taking the 5.3 coil out tomorrow to an old homesite ive got permission to hunt. So far i really like the machine!
