New to the V3 a few questions.....coils

hello all! Few questions about the V3... First is coils... I know I am going to get a shooter coil but what about the 6"X10" DD? My initial testing with the stock 10" coil is that it won't separate as good as some coils I've used. Is the 6x10 known to be a better coin shooter coil, if depth is not my primary concern? Today I tried a few adjustments and I seem to be getting better results with mix mode but still am not getting the separation I'm looking for. Thanks DDigger

Mixed mode will not help with separation, the low recovery delay of 40 will. This allows the coil to finish processing a target and get ready to process the next. In a trash situation depth is not the primary problem. Yes the 6x10 has less width than the D2 and will give better separation. So will lowering the gain to give the coil a smaller footprint and less edge affect. ROB

Ah.....You are right Rob, I checked and in fact I had lowered the RD on the mixed mode program..... I'll try the lowering the gain and see if I get more improvement as well.... THanks DDigger

Mixed mode is a good mode but it wouldn't be my choice in trash. I used Stereo mixed mode but in clean ground when I want the deep ones. Try the 5 Hz filter so you can move slow. ROB

I used the 6x10 this weekend as my tot lot coil and really liked it over the 10" 2D. I could get closer to the metal equipment for sure. Some testing though seemed to indicate the 2D has slightly better depth and response to small gold than the 6x10, but my 6x10 is not V-Rated but I'm not sure how much that influenced the results.

Rule out using the D2 Stock coil for trashy or target rich areas.
The 6X10 is pretty good. I used it this morning and found a silver coin in iron about 2" down and it rang solid (dime thickness but half the size). The iron was so heavy that I couldn't ground balance anywhere! Luckily my last GB worked fine. I also found a button and large coin and some WWII bullets.

I also have the 5" Excelerator coil. This coil works great in trash and irony sites, but don't plan to cover a lot of area. It is better than the 6X10 coil when targets are close, though the 6X10 coil does separate you are overwhelmed with signals. I've pulled coins from an iron rich area with the 5" that the 6X10 didn't hit on. Now, my 5" is not a V certified coil but I can max out the sensitivity. But, why would I want to do that in iron or trash? First, I found that the coil hits 1.5" to 2" wider than the coil with the Rx at 8 and up. At 6 it has no real edge effect, so in trash, that is where I run it to keep things quiet and also to improve separation. It still will go at least 5", if not 7" judging by the solid hits. I use it in 3 frequencies mostly, but through testing found the 22.5 Hz works better on small thin hammered coins (which is equal to some small jewelery I'd imagine.)

So, if the trash gets bad I wouldn't recommend the 6X10. I think the 6X10 is a great main coil to use if there is a fair amount of iron or trash. That said, the depth is probably 2" or 3" within the stock coil. (Can anyone confirm this?). That amounts to 9" or 10" easy on coins.

I would recommend the 5" or the 4X6 Whites Shooter coil. I would like to try the 4X6 to see how it compares to the 5" but am sure they are pretty darn close.

I like the Eclipse 5.3 in the trashy areas and it gets very good depth. For the absolute best in target separation in trash the 4x6 shooter is great but not as deep as the 5.3. If you're able to use the 6x10 then it's not really that bad as far as trash goes.

From a technical and practical point of view, what is the best type of coil to use in iron?
I wonder how those SEF coils work compared to DD coils.
I use DD coils but don't have mineralization (which is one place I heard they excel). Thx EMS

The way you describe your soil, I don't see the advantage of an SEF coil. DD coils have many advantages. But is non mineral ground concentric have advantages.

Concentric loops have the following advantages:
Can get good targets under bad targets because of their cone shaped field
They are 10% quieter regarding magnetic interference from power lines
They have 10% better trash discrimination on iron - steel bottle caps and foil
They can shape the target without walking around it

Thanks Rob. I don't really have EMI problems and have to weigh that 10% in iron advantage. I'll keep an eye out for a sale I guess. Looks like a 5.3 Eclipse might be the ticket in iron.
Does it matter elliptical over round in iron? Any hints for using a DD in iron (like lowering Rx or???).
