Boy,
This year's nickels ended up looking pretty crappy after tumbling. I think that I dug most of them in clay soil and there where probably pretty pitted. Had one fat Indian that went from unidentifiable to display worthy.
I've been doing the year end cleaning, sorting, folder filling and etc. in the hopes that this will cause the ground to thaw. I sure would hate to find a few more after I've tidied up for the year. <img src="/metal/html/wink.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt="

Tried something new with the wheaties, have a whole pickle jar full, they've kinda sort of been soaking in water but pretty crusted up with dirt. Generally I just wipe away enough to see the date. Last night I dumped a ton of hydrogen peroxide in the jar and gave it a few shakes every few minuetes, dumped out and did it again. It really loosened the dirt up and if I wiped them on a terry cloth really cleaned the softened dirt off nicely. However have a least several hundred so this would be tedious. Them 1944 and 44-Ds just aren't worth the work(actually many early dates this year)
Long story short put them in the tumbler with some uncooked white rice, a little water and let it rip. Rice seemed to absorb, rub off most of the dirt. Most of the coins came out clean of dirt, but with all patinas intact. I've tried harder abrasives before which left them too shiny and with a kind of pitted matte finish.
Off to get another bottle of H2O2.
Will keep everyone posted and will have years total's to post soon. If that doesn't soften up the ground nothing will.
Chris
