On page B1 of the 2 November 2005 issue of The Wall Street Journal appeared "New Type of Battery Offers Voltage Aplenty -- at a Premium" by Wm Bulkeley. A startup called A123 Systems in Waltham, MA, is offering a lithium-ion battery with twice the energy density of the NiMH batteries currently used in cordless power tools. DeWalt will introduce a line of 36-volt tools having twice the endurance of their current top-of-line 18-volt line. Improvements this large come very rarely in battery technology.

One would assume that a battery that can run a drill or saw can run a metal detector, so this might be worthwhile.
