new user, settings on SE:help:

I just got my SE and x-1 probe, wondering what you expert users are using for settings such as sensitivity, anyone try a zero threshold, deep/fast, smooth/long pitch hold, ferrous or cond, gain? I am mainly trying to find old coins in medium trashy areas. I've never owned a mine lab. I also would like to find some jewelry as well. I made the mistake already of setting the sensitivity on 28-32 and putting it in semi-auto, talk about frustrating. But I'm afraid to go with a manual sensitivity because I'm not very sure where to start and I'm afraid if it's to low I won't find much in these well hunted areas I am searching. I thought maybe I'd try smooth to lessing the many sounds I don't quite comprehend yet. I don't mind this machine being more sophisticated than my ability to use it, that just means I'm got lots of room to grow and get better, I just need to start some where, hopefully in a less frustrating, more rewarding place. Any help would be much appreciated.:help:

I am no expert but will try and help where I got help. Use sens at what ever 16 or 32 in auto it will work fine. Put sound in normal till you get used to the machine it is less confusing. and the threshold a low hum. (personally I think headphones are a must) With the volume and such where you like it. Now take the machine and teach it (book shows you how) a silver dollar, half silver, quater and dime and two gold ladies diamond rings small ones and put that program in slot one. Hunt with it till you get used to the machine. Then build a program with all the coins you can find and all the rings you can find, 20 gold piece on down and put it in slot 2 then you can go hunt with it. You might like one program in between the two. But you can bounce from one to the other depending on how noisy the area is and really helps get the feel of the machine. This is the way Erikk helped me get used to my ex II and I have read the book on the SE and think you would do just fine with it also. Really simplifies things and sounds.
Good Luck

I just did it, took a bunch of old silver coins and some jewelry, some trash and learned it to reject or except.......20 feet of swinging, no high pitched squeaks at all and boom a 1905 barber dime within five minutes of programming my se......... cool or what?:super: MY FIRST SILVER COIN EVER!!!!!!!! VF 20 to be precise, I however gouged it while digging right under the wreath:rant: so I cant tell if it had a mint mark but hey, I found it..:clapping: I also found modern clad quater, dime nickel and 3 pennies.
