new xt 505

I just recieved a new minelabs xt505. I'm learning how to use it. I laid out some keys, pennys, silver and gold rings like the manual said to do to test detector. keys read on the scale 19 to 21, silver was 42 to 45, but the gold read21 to 27. is this were gold should read. I hope this is not a stupid question, but i'm new. if any one has tips on setting up a xt505 please help.

Gold rings can and do read at a lot of places depending on their size, type, and composition. My wedding ring comes in same as a nickel/pull tab reading, while my wife's ring comes in the same as a foil reading. Probably the only thing you can discriminate out to ensure you don't miss jewelry is iron. JMHO.

I use all metal mode on my 505. You can hear the tones and get numbers in all metal unlike some detectors. It gets busy sounding and most people don't like the constant array of tones, but after you get use to it, you will be able to pick a high tone for a copper or silver coin from the junk tones. I set the sens as high as it will go without chattering, 3 tones, threshold to your own taste, and of course all metal mode. You will have to learn to ground balance, but that is easy to learn. What is nice about all metal is the exterra goes very deep(8 plus inches) and you are not discriminating anything out. If you want gold, you are going to dig tons of trash, but this is the case with any detector. I use the 10.5 inch medium freq. dd coil. It is an outstanding coil for depth and trash separation.

Thank you all for the info. I'm learning, but i want to do it right. So far it seems like a great hobby.

Hey there

I'm not totally familiar with the 505 (I have a 705). One thing that I have only started doing in the last couple of months is setting the auto noise cancel before each hunt. Makes a difference in stabilizing target IDs and depth readings.

as you're new to the machine, dig up every signal until you get to know what the machine is telling you.

Good luck! Oh and do check out my detecting videos on youtube with the Xterra 705. Link below.
