Hello all,

New 305 owner here and was curious. Do most of you prefer listening to the 99 tones or the 3 tone option and why?

I love the sounds with 99 but it can get confusing. Would appreciate any input, Thx!!

Welcome to the X-TERRA forum.

Although some of the literature refer to multiple tone as "99", there is only one tone for each notch segment. Since your 305 has 12 notch segments, it would be capable of producing 12 different tones. I prefer hunting with multiple tone and minimal discrimination as it allows me to "hunt by ear", minimizing the time I spend looking at the meter. JMHO HH Randy

How many tones you listen to pretty much depends on how good your hearing is. If your hearing is good to excellent, multi-tones is usually the best way to go. Although by the same token if your hearing isn't very good, it might be best to go with fewer tones as it is easier to differentiate between them when there are fewer to listen to. It is all a matter of what works best for you.

Welcome!! The number of tones is just what you are confortable with, I'm a 2 tone hunter in all metal for relics.....HH Mark

never hunted the 305 in 3 tone, always multi tone. i hunt mostly beaches. usually all metal mode. i like to hear the pound coins! am just headin out now for a couple of hrs with 305. found a small gold pendant yesterday 1.7 grams.

wahay. back home after an hour with the 305. can you believe it 1st target after 3 sweeps...gold plain wedding band..4.9 grams. rung in low at 4 on tid. but hallmark is worn so cant establish the carat.

I have been using 3 tone on my 705 since day 1, my brother has been using the multi tone, sounds confusing to me too. I guess once you get used to it, it will be fine. When you think about it, it would be the way to do if you have discriminating hearing.

I've always used multi tones, can't tell much difference in sound. May be my hearing or my headphones not that great
