New Xterra70 problem and question

I have a two month old Xterra70 and the external speaker has started to shut down periodically after varying minutes of use(5 to 20 minutes). Resetting to factory presets does not seem to help. Turning the unit off for an hour or so sometimes helps and the speaker will work on start up for 10 to 20 minutes and then will turn off again. The display does not indicate that the control unit thinks that the earphones are connected and the system seems to work perfectly when using earphones which is how I normally use the Xterra. I wanted to use the external speaker to help train a new user and swapping the earphones back and forth is not really working. Has anyone on the forum seen this sort of issue?

Secondly, I am a little confused about Ground balancing with the auto feature. When I attempt to adjust the ground balance I hold the coil 4" from the ground, select the Ground Balance and then press mode/auto and begin pumping the unit until alerted that an automatic ground balance has been found and set. After resetting to factory presets this starting value on my unit is 27. This value after running through the auto adjustment procedure almost always is 26 or 27 everywhere in my test yard. If I manually set the ground balance to 15 turn the unit off, restart it and try to ground balance using the auto feature again in the same spot on my test yard the new auto ground balance value comes back as 15.

Can someone give me a pointer as to what I am doing wrong here? Thanks in advance

First let's take the GB issue. Start by adjusting sensitivity to half way 15. It sounds like you may also trying to GB over metal. The machine will likely not arrive at a GB solution if over metal.

An easy way to see what is going on with the ground you are over is to go into the GB screen and turn on Tracking. Now just walk around swinging the coil as normal while watching the GB track. As you move around the Tracking will change the GB numbers and you can get an idea of the range of GB numbers in your soil. Don't stand in one spot, keep moving.

The first 5 seconds after you push the Tracking button is a high speed mode and should arrive at a solution. It is actually another way to Auto-GB, except you don't have to pump the coil just swing as normal. After 10 seconds of Tracking you can exit it and it will stay locked.

On the speaker issue I would first try pushing the headphone plug in and out several times to see if there is some dirt on the internal switch. Hold the headphone jack pointed at the ground while doing this so dirt can fall out if this is the issue. If not a trip back to the repair depot may be needed.

Thanks BB- Your GB tips and your post on how to use the patterns button to extract the GB numbers was extremely helpful. For the speaker issue I looked through the manual and found that I was resetting to FP using the mode and pattern buttons alone. Don't know why but if I reset to FP using Menu, Mode and Pattern, in that order, the speaker started working and kept working for the rest of the afternoon. Will see how stable it is over time. Thanks again for the reply

On the speaker issue.Im sure you may have checked this but just incase you have not..you may check your batteries..even if the display shows good it could be your problem.. I had some rechargeables in mine and when I sat it down on the ground it would shut itself off. the batts showed good.. I changed them out with regular batts and I have not had a problem since..who knows could have been a contact issue but now its fixed..good luck..
