Well it seems I got off to a good start for the year despite the mostly frozen ground in my area.
My friend did really well New Years eve in the woods of one our local parks and was generous enough to let me know where to try. Me and another hunting partner put in about 4 hours work, and I came out real well considering I don't normally have the greatest of luck in the woods. All of these finds were only 1 to 4 inches deep. I have found that the coins I find in the woods are usually not deep. I have even found a v nickel and a indian head penny on top of the ground just under the leaves before. This time I found an old harmonica reed on top of the ground. The ground was frozen in the grass part of the park, but the woods had some leave cover which insulated the ground from freezing solid. My partner came up with one real nice 1893 indian head and a glory hole of 3 to 4 dollars in new clad. The sterling silver ring weighs almost as much as a half dollar weighs, and was a nice surprise. The 1907 barber dime is a plain, no mint mark. Happy New Year to all.
