Newbie w/ GAMMA 6000, some questions! :detecting:

Hello,

this is my first message in this forum so we need to make some presentation: my name is Luca and I'm from Italy, proud owner of a "tuned" Gold Century 1025 that I bought some month ago and it seems to me very good in depth and discrimination, especially for euro coins and copper/silver items.

One week ago I received my first "serious" MD, the GAMMA 6000, and I have some question for you, I hope someone will reply...

1) What is the difference between Discrimination mode 1 (everything VCO) and ALL METAL motion mode? I've read about "autotune" or "sat" mode, so it seems that this mode has something like an "automatic threshold"... is it real? So there is no need to tune the threshold in "sensitivity" ?

2) Is there some "trick" to ground balance correctly in places full of trash? To ground balance I need to find a spot without trash, but how can I find this spot, if the metal detector is not properly ground balanced? I don't know if there is trash or not...

3) I like to test "in air" the maximum performance of my metals, supposing that in the soil the performances will be directly proportional. What should be the GB value for this kind of test? I've seen that, using some other value than default, the depth may increase a little or dramatically decrease...

Thank you for replies, and sorry for poor language, see you!

I'll do my best to answer.I have a Gamma and some direct experience to your questions...

1) Disc mode can be adjusted to accept or reject metals. The VCO response on tone option 1 is similar to all metal & I like to use 1/2 for most hunting to help me quickly "size" a target.

All metal is similar in sound in that the rheostat noise gives excellent feedback to size a target & gauge depth. Its sensitivity is way higher & it does not reject any metal so anything from bobby pins to small staples will sound off loud. If I have an empty or searched out area I will use all metal to hunt. Tot lots it also helps me zoom in on targets. But it gets a ton of junk.

Tone 2 grunts on iron & rheostat tone on accepted targets.I use that with no notch most often. If I'm in an iron area I want to hear it and use zero disc. For sidewalks & straight coins I go up to 44 min disc & then it is just a rheostat tone so it doesn't matter if T1 or T2 option is used.

The 3-4 tones I use in very crowded areas to isolate targets & then see if I can get them to lock in.I'm also a beep & dig enthusiast so I prefer tones option 1/2 & it has taken time to use the 3/4 to better advantage.

2)In a trashy area-say stepping into a park right?-there is almost always a ton of trash. I switch to all metal or just hit pinpoint to find a bare spot. Just a small one will do & a short pump is better than none. But once away from the trash-verified by all metal-the do the ground balance again. The all metal mode or pinpoint will show trash in the ground at the base setting well enough to get you started(no issue really).
If you remember the GB setting from your last visit you can go ahead & pre-set it.

3)This is answered above -just dial in the GB setting that is typical for your area but frankly air tests are good to train your ears to the feedback. But it has to be some dang good ground to get objective results in the air. Just ballpark best guess type stuff.

If your looking for deep stuff don't disc or notch. Setting the GB is key to getting proper feedback for your area VDI readings are not reliable at depth or with poor soil & that's why I rely on tone/rheostat noise feedback. In open field areas use all metal to search & then switch to disc as needed.

Ciao from Fairview Oregon!
Carl.

Thank you very much for your reply and tricks! Today I made some practice with my new Gamma and it seems that I'm not too able to manage the VCO mode... this sound makes me crazy after 10 minutes... I prefer quiet search in discrimination mode... need more time to make a feeling with this machine...

See you!

Luca
