Newbie with a 10 x 5 Double-D 18.75 kHz Coil

TomboyDgr

New member
Hi, guys! This is a new hobby for me (within the last 2-3 months). I've bought the above-mentioned coil (used).

Here's the question:Where-in-the-heck is the "sweet spot" on the 10x5 DD 18 kHz coil??
* Is it at the base of the shaft (post, or whatever you call it)?
* Is it at the geometric center of the coil?

My ignorance is showing!

Gday TomboyDgr,

Its under the sticker generally.

But with a DD coil like that another good, quick way to pinpoint is ...
Do not press the "pinpoint" button but just swing the coil sideways back and forth across the target in short crossways motions
It will go beep, beep, beep each time you cross over the target
As you as doing that, slowly pull the coil backwards towards your feet
When the beep, beep stops the target should be right in front of the tip of the coil.

If u practise with a coin on the lawn you will get it.
Good luck...its a good coin coil too

That is by far the best way to pinpoint with that coil, and a great coil it is.

Thanks, guys! Duhhhh! Thought it interesting that the gold earring that I tossed down in front of it only gave me a 2 on the scale but it read both sides of the of it's oblong shape. Interestingly, though it was on top of the ground, it told me that it was 3" under!

Feel perfectly free to toss me any tidbits on that coil that come to mind. I'll get out and practice with a coin right now!

Thanks again!

That is by far the coil that I use the most. You are really going to do well with it. Go out and find all of those nickels that people are leaving behind with other coils. With the factory coil I found very few nickels. I went back to many of the same spots and in areas where I didn't find any nickels with the factory coil, I found a good number with this coils. Don't get me wrong, you'll find all of the other coins also.

How high was your coil? That plays a bid role on how far the detector tells you it is in the ground.

I usually have it ON the ground but no more than 1" above.

here is what I have found with my 705. I bought the 3khz and have the standard 7 khz coils that came with my 705, both 9 inches. Also bought the 9 inch 18 khz coil and the 6 inch cc coil. By far I use the 5X10. It's not as deep but is a real sweeper. I use the 6 inch on trashy areas and the others just stay at home. I use my 5X10 in pinpoint after finding a target. Sweep side to side and get the center then pull the coil back towards your feet. When the sound stops the target is right at the tip. Learned that little tip from Snoopy, another member here. Here is a link to that thread http://www.findmall.com/read.php?55,1262977,1288569#msg-1288569

This mornin' I hit the neighborhood tot lot that I've hit four other times to try to get the feel of the coil. It IS different, to say the least. Anyway, I dug a few pieces of clad but not nearly as much as before. By the way, I'm running in pattern 1. My total for today was 3 pennies and an on-top-of-the-gravel dime...that was likely only there for a day or two.

Still working on pinpointing without the pinpoint 'button'.

At this point, I need some guidance with sensitivity and threshold more than anything else. Before I went out today, I put it back to factory. Guess what I'd like to know is...what are the best threshold and sensitivity numbers for this coil?

By the way, guys, I truly appreciate your help! I've spent LOTS of time om my iPad reading your suggested information and everything else that I can find on the coil!

Put on your headphones turn on the detector, set the Noise Cancel and then set the Threshold to zero. Now raise the volume to max and retune the Threshold so it is just barely audible. I had you turn it to zero so in case it was too high, it wouldn't blow your ears off! Set it so it is buzzing enough to know it is there for the purpose of hearing a rejected target null out. But not so loud that it is distracting. Like I said, make it just barely audible. With the Noise cancel channel set, the volume at max and the threshold set correctly, now ground balance your detector. If you have questions on that, let us know. But after all these other things are done, turn the Sensitivity up as high as you can without making it false all the time when you sweep. If all the other settings are correct, you should be able to run a fairly high Sensitivity in areas that are not loaded with trash. I can usually run mine in the upper 20's at those type of sites. But in areas with a lot of trash, you'll want to lower it a bit to keep it from chattering when you sweep.

To pinpoint without using the Pinpoint mode, after hitting a target, simply wiggle your coil back and forth over it, while slowing dragging it toward your feet. At the moment the signal drops off, the target will be directly under the front tip of the coil.

Does turning the volume up to max, then adjusting the headphone volume control make much difference to you finds? I'm talking about the shallower targets, not the ones on the fringe of depth. The reason I ask, is that I don't use headphones and have a strong dislike for them. The only decent ones I has are a pair of Koss headphones. Due to a neck injury 6 years ago, I wouldn't be able to take the weight of the real heavy headphones like grey ghosts etc.
Thanks.
Mick Evans.

Thanks, Randy! You are a great teacher as the sequence is very thought out.

Now, all I need to do is REMEMBER the TIDs that should be dug! I'm tired of diggin to China only to find a tiny, worthless gear (or similar object)!!

Mick, I can relate to the neck injury. If it weren't for the plates and screws they used to rebuild my cervical spine, I couldn't hold my head up! However, if the weight of a set of headphones (like the Gray Ghost) is bothersome, consider getting what I call my "heat of the summer" headphones. For around $15, I bought a new pair of the Garrett ACE headphones. I think they call them Treasure sound or something like that. They are silver-gray, have the small foam-lined speakers and are virtually weightless. The base sound on them is incredible, when sorting out the low tones of ferrous targets. The only two things I dislike about them is that they come with a "thin skinned" straight cord and they do not have separate volume controls. My hearing is a little better in one ear than the other. But after a few minutes of using them I don't notice any difference in signal balance. I run my headphones and the detector "full bore" on volume. The straight cord only gets in my way when I get down on the ground to dig. I try to remember to put the headphones on "backward" with the cord hanging behind my neck. But still, you have to be careful you don't put your knee down on the loop of the cord. JMHO HH Randy

My best advice is to remember the TID's that you don't want to dig. (on a per site basis) If you have a chance to look at the article I've posted on Minelab's Treasure Talk blog, you'll see "what you're missing" by passing up certain TID values. Part one that is up there now is a description of where the blog post is going. Part 2 will actually tell you the items you're passing up if you use too much discrimination. From what I've been told, part 2 will go up next week. HH Randy

Well, Randy, I've already read that post maybe twice. And, I'm lookin' forward to part two. I know for a fact that my gold earring was a 2 so I'd certainly not want to knock that out. Sounds pretty much like I'm stayin' in 1. You're right, for sure, about having to remember what NOT to dig. I'm leavin' shortly for an area church that had some sort of outside gathering...with E-Z-Ups yesterday. So, it'll be yet another opportunity for practice. As far as earphones are concerned, I have the low-end Koss that's made for Minelab. In the heat, I've been using some ear buds...with an extension cord shortened substantially. I'll admit that the wire is most annoying. Think I'll wear the Koss tonight. At least the cord is coiled.

You folks have been most helpful. Feel free to post pointers as you think of 'em. I have a long way to go before I consider myself to be anything other than a "newbie."

the 5x10 DD coil rocks! I haven't tried any other DD coils but I'm sure they're all better than the concentric (I only have the 9"" concentric to go by)

As wizzo kindly pointed out, I do the pinpoint and pull back method. After a bit of practice, many times I can jab a coin with my screwdriver without the need for the garrett pinpointer (NOTE: I only jab with a screwdriver when I am confident of what is under the coil!).

You can see this action on my video "Snoopin for Goldies" (and other videos too). Have a look at the video below and go to 2:30 of the video to see this pinpointing method.

Sweet video! I've already watched the pinpointing several times and it was most helpful gettin' to actually see it. Whoa! Now THOSE are some coins that mount up fast! Might even be able to justify a trip to Australia! ;)

Uh-oh...umm... errrr... sorry the place is hunted out. Nothing left in these grounds but rusty nails and pull tabs.... nah you don't wanna come here

Just kidding.... you are MOST welcome.

Volume (my opinions) should be set for your comfort level. I use 2 different headphones. The Koss you have (UR 30) and a set of Detector Pro Bushmasters. I use the Bushmasters mostley and they have a volume control and in that case I run my volume maxed out on the Xterra. With the Koss I can't turn the volume up as loud, as it hurts my ears. In this case I set the volume to a known target like a quarter or my digger.
As for the Threshold level you need just audible and for me that is usually 2 to 5 depending on surounding noise levels and how many suprise noises I got hit with at work, usually run it at 3 though and rarely change it. BarnicleBill sugests that running at 0 or even negative numbers can lessen the amount of foil one digs and it does work. I believe the down side is that you will miss out on deeper targets or smaller Gold jewlery. In a park brimming with foil this strategy works for me.
Other than that follow Randys list to the letter and you will figure out where you need to run you Sens at with a bit of time, seems to vary by coil and soil and site. Oh I like to run my 705 in the tracking mode.

You may find some good reading and folks in the Christian forum also. There is a bunch of good ones all over this site, lots of help and some good conversation.
