Newbieeeee...headphones???

Barbed Star

New member
Golly...another NEWBIE:happy:! Hello, I am a total 'Pilgrim' except for reading, reading and more reading until it soaks in...(old - slow soaking!) Thanks to you all, am putting my 'to buy' package together. Settled on a X-Terra 705 GOLD :clapping: - few problems, super, versatile machine. 6" (18.75 kHz) DD, maybe a 9" (3kHz), + covers, Pro Pointer. Have plenty of dig, poke and pouch stuff. Am putting my $$$ where the meat is. But am stumped on the headphones, so many to choose from . After a bit of time detecting...what did you find worked best for you with the Minelab? Want volume control, weather resistance, comfort and of course, performance. I have spent hours and hours on the forums. Not only did I prefer the X-Terra for my needs (wants), but I enjoyed the Minelab forum the most for the people and knowledge I found on it. I think the X-Terra 705 GOLD will be good here in Eastern Oregon, in and out of creeks (No fully under water...brrrrr!). Am open to any suggestions. Thanks a bunch.

Welcome to the forum. I have killer bees and have tried grey ghost. I like the way killer bees fit me better. The grey ghost and killer bees have lifetime warranties. I have small earbud type too that I occasionally use and they are louder. There are alot of good ones out there , all depends on your taste.

Welcome to the X-TERRA forum. Glad you're finding it an interesting place to visit. As to headphones......Most of the reputable detector headphone manufacturers put out good products. If you have the opportunity to try on a pair before buying them, I'd suggest that you do. If you don't, then you might consider the size of your melon....... I wear a size 7 5/8 - 7 3/4 size cap. As such, many of the headphones available are too tight for an afternoon of detecting. I've found the Grey Ghost to fit very well. I use the Grey Ghost NDT on a daily basis and keep my older Gray Ghost Originals for a backup pair. Both have excellent sound reproduction, volume control, stereo/mono switch and coiled cord with a 90 degree plug. The padded earcups are comfortable and block out much of the outside noise. Very well made and should last a long time. JMHO HH Randy

Be careful about submersing your coils as some are "Water Resistant" not water proof. See the FAQ FAQ post at teh top of the list for more info. Some guys seal the connections of the 5x10 HF DD. That is the one that comes with the Gold Pack 705.

I use the Detector Pro Bushmasters, they are at the shop right now and I am using the Koss UR 30s. I prefer the DPs and am looking for an appropriate light weight set for the heat of summer. I prefer a single volume control, and the tone of the DPs. I have not tried any other of the high end headphones such as the Pro Gold so can only speak to the Bushmasters, Koss UR 30 and Cal Rad and like them in that order. The Detector Pros block much more outside noise and the Koss have good tone but not as good of a fit for me and the Cal Rad fit decent but were not as good in tone or sound blocking. The Koss are cooler to wear in the heat, but not by much.

That is how it worked out for me. So I am good for now.

Thanks for the replies on the headphones. I went with the Grey Ghost NDT set. No Down Time is good! Also purchased an X-Terra 705 GOLD and some extras from Chuck at Indian Nation Detector. Very helpful, good price...just a great guy to deal with. Now the wait for the big brown truck!

Good luck with your new purchase :drinking:
