New to this whole business. I'm in an area of many old gold and silver mines, all of which are deserted and abandoned. I have no intention of entering any of the old mines but thought I'd try to look at some of the tailings the old miners produced to see if I can find any gold or silver in quartz. The ground here is littered in quartz. I'm using a Fisher F70 and was wondering if anyone has used this model to find precious metal in quartz in the past? If so, what initial settings would you recommend? I have a sample of gold in quartz that I can use to test the settings but so far I haven't been able to get the machine to detect it, even when just laying on the ground.
I'd appreciate any help anyone can provide to get me started.

Welcome to Finds Stone but you'll probably get more responses by posting your inquiry in the prospecting forum-- http://www.findmall.com/list.php?27

f-series vlf machines may not be the best for nugget shooting but I'm sure under the right conditions where are there lots of large , pure grade nuggets laying around close to the surface , they would work fine. If you find a spot like that I'll be glad to bring mine along and demonstate it to you :)

Small coils , a slightly positive ground balance setting and sensitivity settings at the egde of stability in all metal mode will be a good starting point.
