next coil for mxt

i hit on the craps tables in biloxi last week and decided to get another coil for my mxt. i have stock and 5.3 now but was thinking of getting one of the elliptical coils. i do pretty much all my hunting in relic mode. i like the tone difference to help me decide what to dig. and pretty much use the 5.3 fulltime unless i am hunting a Large area. i am wondering will the ellipticals give better depth? and how will it to highly mineralized ground compared to the 5.3. and would like pros and cons on the 4x6 vs 6x10 differences besides size of the coils? anyway what do yall recommend? i am in nortwest florida by the way if it makes a difference.

thanks for yalls help and advice

jeff

5.3 Eclipse for 95% of my hunting because it working around brush and trash well, and the depth of detection is excellent. I like the 950 or 12" for hunting open fields, when using an MXT, but the 5.3 Eclipse (which measures 6

Have I told you how much I like my 5.3" coil? ;) HH, Nancy

Suggest you review Jeff Foster's book, "The MXT Edge." This book has probably the best test comparison of the White's coils. In low mineralization soils, the 5.3 is slightly better than the 6x10. In mid to high mineralization conditions, the 6x10 is significantly better in all areas. The tests also show significantly better depth with the 6x10. I have the 950, 4x6 DD shooter, 6x10 DD, and the 8x14 DD 1400. The 6x10 stays on my machine 90% of the time, and have have heard similar comments throughout the various forums from other White's users. Two recommendations:

1) Get Foster's book - it has a wealth of information, especially in coil selection.
2) Get the 6x10 DD - IMHO the best all-around coil available.

Just my two cents.

Im waiting to receive a second hand 6x10DD this week, it will be my first DD coil. by reviews the 5.3 and the 6x10 are both great coils, I would only chose the 4x6 for nugget hunting

If you decide to buy another coil anyway, I'm agreeing with those that favor the 6X10 which stays on my MXT most of the time. UNLESS you often hunt very trashy spots, then the 4X6 is near surgical in its separation.

The only thing I would add is I found that for relic hunting the 10" DD round coil can't be beat for depth. I have the 5.3, the 6 x 10, and the 10" DD round coil. I use the 5.3 about 80% of the time the 10" DD the other 20%. The 5.3 works great in trashy areas and the 10" DD has great depth and ideal size for relic hunting whether in a field or in the woods. Just my humble opinion.

Probably can't say this too many x's 5.3 is a Concentric which means at it's limits of depth it will only be covering a small area this = lots of overlapping like maybe only advancing the coil 2" per sweep . With the 10x6 it is a DD and the coverage area at it's maximum depth ability will be much better. Also mineralization is a factor then the DD 10x6 , but it is YOU that must decide. I have and out of production "Hot Foot" that has the same coverage as the 10x 6 and is also "Hot" along all the edges of the coil. So I use it a loy in tight areas and where there are cracks in bedrock and in narrow gullies. If you can find one might want to try it!

I have a stock 950 coil and the 5.3 coil. When hunting trashy areas I use the 5.3 coil for great separation. I am really impressed with the 5.3 coil, it's very stable and has great dept in all grounds. The 950 is good for better dept, but honestly I sometimes go over the same ground with both coils and always find more targets when I do that. Although I feel I am missing something, like the eclipse DD 6x10. If Santa was coming to my home, I would request this coil to my arsenal. Anyone selling a used one?

About the only 2 coils I use on my MXT any more are the 4x6 and D2. I make some very deep finds with the D2 and am comfortable in a semi-trashy area with it but when the trash is too overwhelming I use the 4x6. I have the Super 12, stock coil and 6x10 and rarely use any of them anymore but every now and then in the woods I'll use the 6x10 because of the fact it doesn't catch on twigs, branches and stuff. To me there's not a whole lot of difference in depth between the 4x6 and 6x10 but I'm sure the 6x10 would probably go a tad deeper, but for depth I'll have the D2 on my machine and it's on there about 80% of the time. When I go to a spot I've never hunted before I bring along the D2 and 4x6.

One thing I forgot to mention is that in testing, I found that the 10"DD is quieter and deeper than the stock coil and the 6"x10". Thats why I recommend the 5.3" and the 10"DD.
