Nickels all over!

I fired up my GPS nav unit, did a search for schools in a 5 mile radius, picked one at random that I have not hit yet. (I highly recommend a GPS nav unit as a hunting guide!)

I got there and found 2 large play areas, one with shredded tire chunks, and another with wood chips that were darn near a foot to 18 inches deep!

I started near the swingsets, and darn near picked a dozen nickels from there with only 4 pennies! Around the playset produced even more. I've never hit a spot like this where pennies were not the top count in finds!
My guess is that a nickel is the common change for lunches.

At the end of the hunt, I wound up with over 20 nickels, 3 quarters, 12 pennies, and 10 dimes and less than 5 pulltabs!

As an added bonus, the site also produced a recent vintage Chuck E. Cheese and Ceaserland game token.

By the way, If you're ever digging in a shredded tire park I suggest surgical gloves. The muck that lies underneath is downright nasty!

Thats alot of nickels, good job

I had fits hunting a tire mulch area. I dug maybe 20 metal stems, other metal and wire. I think someone already hunted it with high disc. Then left the nickels for you.

I hunted one of those tire places once. It was hot and stunk like tires. It made my hands black. It made the bare footed kids feet black. There ought to be a law against them. I wouldn't hunt another.

I was wondering-do all the GPS units have schools already installed in them-are they just icons? And what other buildings, etc. are on a unit? Thanks

I have a little cheapie Delphi Nav200, as soon as the GPS grabs a satellite signal, I hit Navigation and then Destination, nearby location, select schools, and then a list of schools comes up. I select one, and then hit start navigation and it tells me where to go to get there. There are a lot of schools hidden away in subdivisions!

I also like to use google or microsoft live satellite image maps, I can scan around for parks in map mode (The parks are usually highlighted in green) then switch to satellite image to get a look at how big their playgrounds are.
The bad thing is, that some of the imagery is somewhat dated. I went to a park that had a couple of volleyball courts on the map, only to find that they were now gone and grass is there, and only the posts of the net remain.

Great finds on all of those nickels. I don't find too many of them, they are by far the least of my coin finds. Great job!!!

Those Volleyball courts that are over ground with grass could just be ideal spots for good finds.:detecting:

Yeah, Joel had a great thought there. I would HOPE that some of the schools had old images that might not be there today. I just got rid of my GPS-traded it and some other stuff for a detector. I was one of those geocachers for a very short period of time and feel like DUH~!-why didn't I think of that. Thanks for a great post:thumbup:

Not this one lol.. There was a grand total of 0.12 in the whole thing. I thought I may have been missing some, so I set the sens a little hotter, and picked up another couple of pennies.
