Nicle at 9"

Goodrat

New member
Burried a nicle at 8" (East Florida, back yard), so I guess call it 9" with grass/coil height.
I can get it clear with my Shadow X3, but with my SE just an occasional hint of a nickle.
Got the sense turned up etc. What can I do to detect that nickle with the SE?

The explorer generally won't detect a freshly buried target very deep. Give it a year or two, then detect it.

Of course I'm not sure about Florida soil/sand either as far as detecting depth goes.

Good question. I've seen other folks mention the SE isn't as hot on nickels but at that point I'd not noticed yet since I was still digging mostly surface stuff. But I haven't dug a solo nickel yet with any depth compared to hits I got with my previous machine, a Sov. Now silver and copper, on the other hand, I'm getting good depth on most of the time. Be interesting to see again what the more experienced users have to say.

I agree with bgsco. I made a test garden this spring along the side of my house, and at first I couldn't hit any of the coins measured out 8 inches or deeper. The shallower stuff, no problem.

A couple weeks ago, after a thunderstorm, I tried again with the new pro coil. I have a silver dime between 8-9 inches, that would barely hit and bounced all around the smartfind. And I have a buffalo nickle at 8-9 inches that rides up/down the the right side of the smartfind? Both targets didn't sound that good either.

And the sickest one....I have a corroded indian head slug at around 10inches, that hits almost solid iron. I couldn't get it to pull to the right. (But it didn't hit totally tight top left corner, and bounced around)

I was running 23 manual sensitivity with the screen wide open, bumping it up didn't seem to make the signals improve, just made the machine more jumpy. I was at park later that day and was hitting wheats at 8-9 inches w/solid coin ID, no problem at all.

I tried the test garden a few days later with my tesoro tigershark, which also couldn't hit the deep stuff. Then tried the SE, and I guess since the moisture was gone, all was quiet again.

I am waiving 14K gold chains in front on my coil. I mean, very close, right against it. Also medium 14K ear ring set.
Should't I detect those? I'm in all metal, sense way up.
Detecting the nickle now. After a few days.
Either it established itself in the dirt, or I learned the machine better.
