Night Detecting

I was itching to go hunting all day Tuesday so after dinner around 8:30pm I excused myself from family duties and went for a drive to the beach (about 15mins). I spent about an hour and a half walking up and down and pulled out about $8.00. So nice there at night. Hardly anyone around being a Tuesday night.

I then strolled to the big park on the beach front where there was a big Cultural Festival a couple of weekends ago. Thinking it would have been hunted to death by all the other keen detectorists around, I swung the xterra and immediately found a $2 coin on the surface. I ran back to the car and got the pinpointer and screwdriver (I only had the sand scoop at the time). Within about an hour I pulled out another $17 from an area about 5 sq.m. - obviously an area missed by those detectorists. I understand the park management don't particularly like MDists at that park so it was a bit naughty of me to go there but hey I picked up all the rubbish and I did not dig one single hole! Besides there was not another soul in sight by 11pm on a Tuesday night.

Got home by 11:30pm with just over $25 plus a can opener and an old bracelet thingy. I gotta do this again!

Ciao

Thanks Beale. Yes those $2 coins are real beauties! We get some parks literally littered with these 'goldies' as we refer to them. I hear of some detectorists from the bigger cities whose monthly totals get as high as $800 - $1000! My best month so far was $130 in loose change. But I do go out only maybe once a week (I work full-time).

Cheers

Great going Snoopy36, got to agree those $1 & $2 coins are great to find even over this side of the ditch, the tally soon adds up

 Metal detecting in areas where it is not allowed gives this entire hobby a blackeye. JMHO HH Randy

No Randy. Detecting in all public areas are allowed over hear, unless there is signage in parks saying otherwise or a park is heritage listed. Some council rangers just don't like detectorists and can cause trouble (they do have discretionary powers to move you on, I think) so it's just best to go when they are not around.
I like radio control aircraft and so long as what you fly is a park flyer (which are usually electric (low) powered planes that are mostly made of styrofoam, then you can fly them in a park so long as there are no signs in the park specifically forbidding it. If you go down and ask the council and they say no, then at that point you are no longer able to fly as it works in the same way as the signs. We have authority to do as we please in any park by default to enjoy these public places. Sometimes, especially when you have either power hungry or a hostile council (which can be caused by bad past experience) then it's best to be discrete when pursuing your hobby or other reasonable interest of using a public space.

Thank you Mick for that clarification. Digger - Mick is correct - it is not specifically forbidden to MD there. I have heard that some council people frown on MDists because of holes being dug and mess being left behind. I am quite proud of my technique and for that particular park, I did not dig one single hole. I simply popped coins out with my screwdriver. The deep coins I did not even bother.

I actually went back there this morning after the night markets last night and some council workers later came to clean up. They came up and said "G'day did you find anything?" - it was all good as they could see I only had a screwdriver and a pinpointer. They were only sad because i got there before they did and they usually look forward to picking up the dropped coins from the night markets before :)

Don't worry - I am one to uphold the reputation of this great hobby. And you do have every right to express your concern. Maybe I should have explained the situation a bit better in the first place.

Anyway, have a nice day

Cheers

In my neck of the woods, if the park folks don't want you detecting, it is off limits. When I've questioned why it is off limits, I always get the same response....... someone came in without asking permission or after hours, and rules were put into place to keep everyone out. Glad to hear your part of the world is different. Thanks to both of you for the explanation. Again, sorry for misinterpreting your statement. HH Randy
