a thought came to mine, the soil here is about 20 inches deep, black rich dirt. theory_ thought a coin would
continue to go deeper until it reached a medium its own weight, or a rock, root. i live central part of Illinois
has anybody had any luck in deep soil?

You could not be in any better soil for hunting coins.

It also settles at various rates based on the angel of the coin, obviously a coin on edge would settle quicker. You also have to figure not only settling but coverage of the target, both by mother nature and man. So you kind of have to dig a few targets just to see if they were covered. If the soils has not been disturbed then you are just dealing with physics, density, surface, and obstructions. In Florida sand a silver coin can be out of site of a detector that was dated in the 50s. I dug 18 wheats today... not a silver coin, all these coins were around 8 inches.... its possible the silver has already been dug, i didnt walk over it, it was below my detector settings, or just wasnt there. We all have those kind of days. I normally dig at least a couple of silvers coins with that kind of ratio.
