No Threshold???

New member
Went out yesterday for the first time in almost a year. This was due to an operation on both my elbows at the beginning of last year. To say I couldn

Hi Paul,i use the sov in England and had the same thing happen on a Roman site. The ground was so iron mineralised the threshold disappeared and did'nt come back, so it could be that this area was having the same type of effect??Like you say,the sov will still pick up targets when the threshold is in a null......i had a number of roman coins while the sov was silent.

Maybe you are on top of a sunken ship - all that iron, the processor working hard - all those targets... ???

It is very possible that there was a large piece of iron buried where your were. I have had stop signs uncovered on the beach pole and all! These type items can be a problem to say the least.

Hi Paul that happened to me about 3 weeks ago on a north side beach here i lost my threshold with my Sov GT i thought i flipped the switch to silent search but i didn't confused the heck out of me but
now i think i know what happened reading your post i was still getting signals and finds but no sound until i hit a target one thing i noticed was if i dug down over a foot deep i hit a very red rusty sand nothing solid just red sand and a lot of it all over the beach , the Town just put a Historical sign up on the beach i took a picture of it , that explains all the iron rust on the beach 3 huge Navel ships sank off that beach beach in the 1812 War by a hurricane ,I did however find a few good targets without a threshold most of the time 1 being a fat chunky silver ring right next to a pile of that red sand ,so reading your post i put 2 and 2 together and figured it out Thanks ! :detecting:Jim

Ok i agree with most here that it would possibly be down to the possibility of iron contaminated ground. Given i was down to the exposed soft clay i guess that's where any potential iron particles over the years would break down in the sand and settle in the soft clay.

Why would my threshold come back on if the coil was kept still then? (Jim did you also find this).

Would it not have just nulled or does the detector need to be in motion for the nulling to work correctly?

Paul....

It dont take much motion to get a signal, but this is why when you stop the detector over any target and hold it still while in disc it will reset the threshold, now if it was iron or a disc out target it will null when going over it, but hold it still and the threshold resets itself, but move it a little and it will null again.
