Norwegian Cruise Lines and my confiscated detector....

Sanddigger

New member
Waiting for my suitcase well into the evening, I ventured down to find out where it was located. My suitcase was in the holding area wrapped in red tape that read "security issue".

Ok, I'm glad they are doing their job checking luggage but to ask me if it's a weapon??? Only when my hunting partner finds something better than me. She gets whacked in the knees!!!!!!!!!!! Just kidding.

They were going to keep it and when I wanted off the ship to use it, I would get it and then turn it back in. $1,000.00 detector - that made me feel warm and fuzzy. Finally, around 8 PM, they decided to return it to me and it was in my possession the entire cruise. I surmise Security personnel Upama googled metal detectors or found someone who knew what they were.

I have heard that Royal Caribbean confiscates them at the dock before boarding, and you don't get them back until after the cruise.

Not one word regarding a METAL DETECTOR.

Q: What items are not allowed onboard the cruise ship?

The following are examples of items that guests are not allowed to bring onboard. These and other similar items will be confiscated upon being found. Alcoholic beverages, illegal drugs, flammable liquids, explosives, and dangerous chemicals will not be returned..

Prohibited items: Firearms & Ammunition, including realistic replicas.
Sharp Objects, including all knives and scissors with blade length 4 inches or more.
(Note: Personal grooming items such as safety razors are allowed.)
Illegal Drugs & Substances

Alcoholic Beverages (Note: Alcoholic beverages that are purchased in ports-of-call or from shops onboard will be stored by the ship and delivered to you on the last day of the sailing. Alcoholic beverages seized on embarkation day will not be returned.)

This is a cross reference to a similar topic on the same forum. The cruise lines are not consistent in the rules. The rules are different in writing compared to over the phone. You should contact the any cruise line personally before booking with them if you plan to bring your detector and not have it confiscated. Get everything in writing and have the document in your hand when you are ready to board ship.

Good news!... at least for now?

Here's RC's official response in writing regarding my complaint about my upcoming cruise about not being able to bring a metal detector onboard their ships:

Dear ____________________________

Thank you for your email. We apologize for the delay in our response.

Metal detectors are not a prohibited item onboard Royal Caribbean's ships. However, if a guest brings one onboard, it must be stored inside the guest's stateroom. Additionally, use in a port of call is subject to local laws and regulations. While Labadee is a private resort, Haitian law may still prevent their use on land. We recommend contacting the Haitian government on the legality of a metal detector's use on the beach.
