Nother defaced coin

Steve's Irish Penny reminded me of the 1820 Large Cent I found that was also defaced, at an older farm site in Wisconsin.

CS mentioned this and it is one of the things I explored with the Irish penny when I found it. At one time counterfeits of the large coppers was a going concern with most everyone including blacksmiths getting in on the action with varying degrees of skill. I have read that at one point the majority of George III halfpennies in colonial America were counterfeits.
Anyway, Cierlast, I thought the face of that pretty lady on your penny looks, er.... kinda funny. Here's a pic and a description of a counterfeit large cent recently sold at auction:
>>Lot # 15 1819 Sharpness Grade: as made Net Grade: as made Counterfeit Large Cent. Antiqued reddish brown with a satiny finish. No Copy stamp but not anything like a genuine large cent. Bid at $26 High Bidder # 5 <<<

Too bad my coin is in such sad shape; you can really see the differeces around it's nose area in your photos. Thank you Steve.

At the link below, there are 12 varieties of the 1820 LC. Also listed are weights. If yours is over or under by much, that's a dead giveaway.
Two of the varieties have a similar style "2" and "zero" as yours, but on both the "2" looks smaller in hieght in relation to the "zero" and the "zero" does not look as fat as yours. <img src="/metal/html/shrug.gif" border=0 width=37 height=15 alt=":shrug">
