http://www.findmall.com/read.php?17,1286071,1286195#msg-1286195 I tried my new XTerra 305 three times now, gave up using it early today had enough waste of time and effort. and money. I 'm so pissed right now I feel like doing what that guy did on video. And do the same to my XTERRA !!!! I am going to pack it back up in its box right after this thread.

Lots of other detectors out there. If you don't know how to use it, pack it up. See ya.

It's called learning frustration. Give it a break and give yourself the space to realise that it's normal to feel a level of frustration as you learn a new skill. As you use it more, although you will have frustrating days, it does eventually get easier.

WOW...I'M SPEECHLESS IN NEW ENGLAND. GLAD I DIDN'T HAVE THAT ATTITUDE! BUT THEN AGAIN, I GAVE UP ON MY BRINK MAN SMOKER AFTER 2 TRYS..WHO THE HECK AM I TO BE JUDGEMENTAL? LOL LOL LOL..HAPPY HUNTING! EMMETT

If you thought you were going to pick it up in an hour you were mistaken.

Now stop fooling around and go learn the machine and find some goodies. 20 to 50 hours to get it, then another bunch to master it any body who says other wise is fooling ya. All machines take training to run, then training to master. Even Metal detectors, simple ones included.

They are not for everyone. The first week I had my x-terra 50 I felt like that. But I did not post a thread like you did. I stayed with it and learned it and went to places others said was hunted out and found things. I then bought a 70 and continue to find coins and relics that other detectors have missed. My x-terra now is like my best friend , I know what it is telling me and. Just calm down a little and keep learning what it is telling you.

Lots of us here have found the X-TERRA to be a highly capable detector. Several days ago, you asked for directions on how to ground balance your 305. I posted some pretty simple instructions that would accomplish the task. If the detector isn't operating properly, you should take it back to the dealer or send it to Minelab. If they determine there is nothing wrong with the detector and you want to continue in the hobby, you need to either trade if off or learn to use it. HH Randy

Wow is all I can say since I gave my opinion about it.
I'm truly sorry.
Maybe because I spent numerous hours on it and I put my
other detector on a vacation to learn the Xterra 305 that
it has now become part of my left hand. When I got it
back in February I asked questions and was given answers,
and was told to read the manual over and over. As with any
detector even the Ace 250 it took time to learn and get use to its
quirks. My finds today compared to the ones back in February
have increased a great deal, and I'm proud of my finds now and
you can see in my posts, and I even took several months off because
of triple bypass, but I stayed with it and today I love the Xterra.
Will I keep it forever ? Probably not, just because I like change.
But I will say the Xterra 305 if learned is one remarkable detector.
I'm very sorry if I miss lead you.

Happy Hunting
Bruce

I have been Relic Hunting over 30+ plus years and used so many different brands I could saved my money and buy an 2011 Corvettes on all money i spent. The X-70 dollars for dollars has great depth for Relic Hunting, very easy to use and not many settings to set as many other brands. BUT even myself an very experience hunting it took few month to learn how to adjusted sen. and others features and found lots relics missed in many old Camps sites with the X-70. The biggest thing many peoples forget that Relic Hunting is truly different many other types hunts, coin beach etc. Most Relics are deep and most first know your machine and hunt slow, and you cant finds relics it nothing in ground. No matter what brand machine you buy, to say only after 3 times hunting with any machine it false. Relic Hunting is very tough hobby and good sites are hard to find. If don't put time in effort to learn new machine no matter what brand, you really need look at new hobby!

It hasn't been long since I got my first detector and I didn't know what to expect. I have dug and dug and have yet to find anything other than clad, hotwheels, useless iron, pull tabs, bottle caps, nails, etc, etc. I'm still learning and still dig everything. I don't have anything to compare to but every dig yeilds something beit trash or a penny. I didn't pick up this hobby in hopes of finding untold riches or even entertained the thought of unearthing anything of historic value. My best find was in my own back yard, what I thought to be a silver bar, a two ounce ingot. I melted it down to burn off the impurities did the usual mustard test and it failed.

But ya know what I was so excited. I found something that wasn't the usual. It melted down quick and I found out it was bismuth. Why I had a 2oz chunk of bismuth 6 inches deep in my backyard who knows. Read up, crystalized it , and was glad to find it. If you can't make the best of what you have then it's time for change.

I started with the Gold Snoop Pro - a fairly inexpensive entry level detector. Had the best time with it, used it heaps and got to know its single tone very well, enough to distinguish different targets. Then I moved up to the X-Terra. First trip with it, I wanted to go back to the Gold Snoop Pro, my 'comfort zone'.

But I persevered and now, the poor old Gold Snoop Pro is gathering dust. XTerra rocks - I dug up 5 silver coins on Saturday in three hours plus a whole lot of coins totaling just over $20 (here in Australia).

DiggingNorway on YouTube had great success with his 305. So put the time in and you'll come out successful.

Cheers
Snoopy

Felt the same way about my Yugo, but once I re-built the engine after 300 miles I realized I should ahve bought better. Seriously, I have had my 305 for about a month and I learn more about it everyday. I know by next spring I will be finding much better things. Who knows, with global warming we may have year round detecting in Nebraska soon.

I really tried to like it. I put in some hrs on it.In fact i gave it one more chance but 18 cents for over ten hrs easy is sad.I mean when it did hit a coin it was solid. But it just loved hot rocks here, double checking signals and digging hot rocks. I have used other detectors. XLT,Prizm V,XLT again,IDX Pro,Quantum XL,Fisher 1236X2,Troy Shadow X3,F2,F5.The soil here has a lot of iron in it etc.I really thought it would produce I even had got it with the HF 5X10 coil.So I traded it in for a new detector. But honest guys I thought i was going to go to town with it. I had found stuff quicker with lesser detectors, but thanks for all your help. The Xterra 305 was just not mean't to be for me, i'M SURE IT ROCKS for some people and places.

I THINK YOU DID THE BEST THING......:clapping::argue:

I see you have used alot of whites. When you get used to a brand it is hard to use another. Iwent from a bh to minelab so had no problems. Well I hope you get one you like.

I saw that video and it almost put me off the X-Terras.

Glad I got one though. After my Bounty Hunter Tracker IV it was a tough learning curve.

Stick with it.

I think that was the problem, with the XT-305 you where working in a type of iron mineralization along with hotrocks, even a DD coil did not help. I have an XT-70 and when using a DD coil in some very mineralized clay soil, I had good high TID number signals everywhere in Coin & Treasure Mode which turned out to be nothing and drove me nuts. These machines are not made to hunt in some types of ground conditions. Most people use these machines in either non-effecting mineralization, low mineralization, or benign ground where they work fine. You should try another model of detector now. The Minelab BBS-FBS machines like the Excalibur II, Sovereign GT, Safari, & E-Trac handle these bad ground conditions much better than single frequency machines. Maybe also enquire and you could try a Lobo ST, MXT Pro, T2, F75-CZ, or the new AT Pro?

I had a 705 and i really tried to make it work for me,but to no avail it just wasnt my cup of tea.
The person who owns it now ive seen has found some really great things which makes me happy.
It wasnt that it was hard to learn,it just didnt work well in my area.

I look at it this way,

My trusty old Bounty Hunter Tracker IV is widely acclaimed as a great entry level detector and I have found heaps with it. Many folk swear by it's ability.

Why then, would a detector costing around 3 times the price of the Tracker IV (ie: the 705) be a lemon ?

The 705 works great in all conditions and does what it is advertised to do and as per the manual.

Although, you really need to put in some time getting to know the 705 and practice with it. That is part of the fun and challenge for me.

Can't comment on the Xterra 305 & 505s as I have never owned one.

Danno:)
