To all on the forum, we all need a little humor from time to time and Prospector Al sure got to me on the one about the Moon influencing metal detectors. Maybe you guys should ban me instead for being dumb. I am very sincere in the questions I ask and truly interested in learning as much as I can. I am very interested in the physics that are involved with these instruments too, but I am nowhere competent enough to understand it in great depth. Anyway if you guys don't mind I will keep asking questions and some of them maybe pretty simple. God Bless all. Wirechief.

I'm right there with you. I have always been someone who has to see the concept with a hands on tool.
I make pottery, you tell me a shape an it does not stick but if you show me, I got it.
I understand the idea of PI but need to clear out all the trash in my brain to get the meat. I think there are those of us that have the basics but when we are looking at a system that to start with has so many variables, the earths mag field, the earths hot rock, minerals, ect and get down to how an object behaves with this signal, I have a hard time. It takes me longer than the average bear to really get it.
I enjoy knowing that there are others that live and breathe "FET's" 555 timers and that I'll goof up and ask questions that to me were world shaking but really are not.
It's all cool. 10 yrs ago we never had this access to this type of information, I'm glad to be part of it. Wyndham

You bet Wyndham I'm also glad we have the technology to do the internet thing. It is definitely the information age. I appreciate your comments Wyndham and I'm wanting to learn the physics side of detectors. This forum is my favorite and I print out as much as possible. I bought the PCB's for the Hammerhead PI project and need to order parts for it and start construction. It is very gracious of Eric and Reg and others to share the knowledge. Good to hear from you again Wyndham and we will chat soon. Wirechief.

Hi Wirechief,

Here is a better one for you. When I first began to investigate PI's, I wondered the same thing and actually believed it also. Part of this was based upon some serious documentation done by a fellow nuggethunter and good friend.

This good friend of mine had kept careful records of all the nuggets he had found over a several year period while nugget hunting in AZ, and his records showed his nugget finds increased significantly around a full moon. Actually, he said his greatest success was right after a full moon.

What reinforced this was he convinced a friend to do the same, so the friend also keep records and his records reflected the same results.

Now, this nugget hunter is one of the best nugget hunters I have ever hunted with. He takes or rather, took it very seriously, (he has basically quit hunting because of health conditions).

Also, at the time, I knew the earth field effects existed but really didn't know how they were minimized. Now, when one investigates just how the earth's magnetic field is altered by the moon, then it was easy for me to see how something like this could occur.

So, the bottom line is, if you are dumb, than so am I. Maybe, we can form a club.

Reg

Thanks Reg for the story and that is rather interesting how their records were working out, but just coincidental I'm sure. I sure wish I was in gold country since I'm more interested in nuggethunting but someday I will get out to Arizona and give it a go. Well let me assure you that your not dumb and I just hope I can absorb some of the knowledge and experience you have on metal detectors and be able to pass it along to a young-un sometime. I started a metal detector business part time about 8 months ago and actually I'm more captivated by the theory and electronics of these instruments. Thanks for the PM Reg on the Beachscan. Ok I will chat with you later my friend. God Bless. Wirechief.

Hi Wirechief,

I still am not sure just why my friend's records show an increase of nugget finds during a full moon. One thing I know for sure is you will not convince him there isn't a correlation. I still haven't given up completely on the possibility that there is something to it. Then again, there may be some truth that nuggets simply come up on nights of a full moon to "sun" themselves and don't go back down as deep. Rumor has it that is what gives them there golden glow.

Back to my friend's records, I took a look at them, and they clearly showed a difference. Now, to make matters worse, his health severely limited his activities so he couldn't have been hunting more, longer, or much harder at the time of a full moon. It simply wasn't possible. Also, he would hunt any day his health would let him. Nugget hunting was the one great love of his life and he was at it any time he could. His records didn't show any difference or that he may have been hunting more at that time either. If he wasn't in the hospital or flat on his back because of his health, he was out hunting.

So, 3 years of records seemed pretty convincing and put strains on this being a coincidence.

Reg

Well Reg I actually try to keep an open mind until evidence shows true or false for sure. Yes 3 years of records is pretty hard to argue with and since I'm not a physicist I'm surely not in a position to say true or false. Prospector Al did seem to indicate in his email to me that were at a point that physics is the domain we should be looking at for the next big jump in detectors. So maybe I was a little hard on the guy in my email. I met an older gentleman that has been looking for 300 year old buried Spanish gold caches for 35 years now. He has a theory that the Earths magnetic field interacts with the gold caches and emits a signal or energy at 500Hz and he wants me to build a receiver to hear this signal. But 500Hz is in the hearing range of the human ear. It does'nt hold water to me but I have'nt written him off. Anyway I'm going to start breaking out my physics books and do some reading. If you know of any good textbooks that might pertain to this field will you let me know? So thats how those nuggets get their color haha! Talk to you later Reg and God Bless. Wirechief.

Hi Guys,
There's a lot more going on in this universe than man has discovered thus far, and unhealthy scepticism hinders progress, just look how Copernicus was treated.
Anyway, in beach detecting the moon does affect the finds rate, and it is often attributed to the moons effect on the tides, but maybe it's more than that. I've kept some crude records, and these tell me that I'm more likely to find gold and silver after the highest and lowest (full moon) tides.

Please can I join your dummies club too? :nerd:
Cheers
Kev.

Gosh Kev I would'nt want to leave you out so just jump right on in here with us brother, Amen! But you are right about the skepticism and we do need to be open minded about things so that we can discover more. I really felt that Al's idea made sense and maybe he is on track, I don't know since I have never experimented with these conditions. Maybe I need to apologize to him but he said that he got banned from the forum after posting his idea in relation to my inquiry. CU later Kev and take care. Wirechief.

Hi Reg and all,

The problem is, that the moon has no intrinsic magnetic field. There are local pockets of magnetic rocks, but these are too weak to be able to influence the earth's field from a quarter of a million miles. The strongest magnetic anomaly on the moon is at least 100 times weaker than the earth's magnetic field. The dipole N and S field on the earth is due to convection and electric currents which flow in the molten iron core. There is no evidence that the moon has such a core.

Eric.

Hi All and Al,

Prospector Al has not been banned from the PI Forum. There must be some other reason for not being able to post. Al's posts have always been instructive and valued by myself and others, and, as Wirechief says, a little humour now and again is a good thing. I find I remember things better, if there is a humourous story attached to them.

However, Al's post regarding the moon's effect on metal detectors had a serious side. Radio communication is affected by many things that originate in space, so why not metal detectors? They have an antenna and a wide band receiver, PI's anyway, so it is reasonable to think that such outside influences may have an effect. We can all learn from answers to questions like these.

Come back Al,

Eric.

Hi Swansea, nice to meet you and actually everything is cool. I got an email from Al just awhile ago and he was just proving a point and I over reacted on my part. But I tell ya Swansea, Al is an extremely intelligent fellow and I don't hold a candle to him or any of the other EE's on the forum. If your into PI instruments this is the place to learn and it has become so interesting that I been breaking out the physics and electronics textbooks again. I had been burned out on electronics but these guys have revitalized me. Ok I will CU again Swansea and God Bless ya my friend. John, Wirechief.

Hi All,

I'm back on the Forum. First, let me emphasize that I never intended to poke fun at anyone. The object of the post was to inject a little levity into the very serious subject of metal detecting.

Second, THERE ARE NO DUMB QUESTONS! People like the Wirechief, who think outside the box, force us to reexamine the presumed facts, and sometimes that's what it takes to solve a problem...

You are a great bunch of guys on this Forum, and I've enjoyed being here, this past year...

A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Detecting Year to all!

Prospector Al (The Moon Detector Man)

The best thinkers/designers need the best end-users for their feedback on the designed products....The unschooled mind uses the eyes and ears differently than the educated. The formally trained knows "No's" the self-educated does not know exists. Many, like me, do not know where the "Box" is so thinking outside of it is the only way I know.

The greatest example of all coming together is this forum and we all have profited because we all give our input that we learn in such a sharing manner.

We all need each other and this forum proves this point.

I personally thank each of you for what I learn just by hanging out here...It all started with Mr. Foster shared with all of us and it continues....thank goodness...

Merry Christmas All

Frank Hamill

Hi Mr.Hamill, Thank you for the input and I hope you had a Merry Christmas out your way. I want to say hello to Al too, how are you doing Al? I've not been on lately so I need to make a post. Yes let's just throw that old box away Mr.Hamill who needs it! Eric is a really nice fellow and I think he has a great forum here. It sure is nice to have a place to gather together alright. I gotta tell you Mr.Hamill there are a lot of really, really smart people here and I'm not one of them. But Eric, Al, Kev, Mr.Bill all put up with my questions so I know I came to the right place. So it is very nice to meet you Mr.Hamill and I hope you will show us a thing or two about these instruments called P.I.'s. God Bless you and everyone else here on the forum. de John the Wirechief out Blackwell way.
