Howdy,

I got out for my fifth hunt of the season this evening. It was a short hunt, but I tried to squeeze the last drops of daylight out of it. Headed back to where I had left off, staying with the Excelerator coil still and now just listening to to try and catch some high chirps in a tighter search area that I know has produced some age.

The first decent possibility had a lower tone to start with, more like in a Wheat range, but wasn't a completely solid signal. Still, it repeated after rotating the coil, but it only had a very tight wiggle room before getting into nulls again. I was pleasantly surprised to see a nice silver rim in the dirt, all the more so after I saw a chunk of aluminum foil of some sort mixed down in near it. I think that's why the signal was a little off. Turned out to be a 1918-S Merc, and I got it early enough in the hunt to relax a bit more I think.

Since I managed to miss this target many, many times before (I've been over this ground a lot, or at least it seems like it), I thought I may as well got super slow and circle out from around where I found this, and see if I could hook another chirp. About three or four feet away, I actually did! Again, kinda iffy tone, really up in the high iron false chirp sounding range, but it would hold when I rotated the coil. Not much signal to work with though, as it had some depth. But it cleaned up when I went to recover it, and after flipping out some dirt, I was rewarded with a nice chunk of black dirt with a beautiful silver rim peeking out. When I split it open, I saw the back side of the Barber dime, and could see it had the O mintmark. (I've never found Seated here, so just assumed it was a Barber). Now that really made my night as far as I was concerned. Too bad it wasn't an S though...

I did manage two Wheats (one being the last target of the night, in more darkness than light), but not old ones. I suppose I did get a "poor man's trifecta" though, as I did pick up a clad Roosie too....

So far, so good this year. Thanks for looking.

Very nice hunt DirtFlipper!!

Dirt Flipper -- Again -- great hunt, great job communicating the details of the machine's response, and then the target produced. I love reading these kinds of posts; I just wish I could find these types of hunting spots! WOW!! :)
