O8K kicks arse in EXTREMELY 'hunted out' area

Today I went to the absolute crappiest park I know of. This park has been hunted hard and often. It is a big park, but has fairly small areas that are open to metal detecting, and those areas are the ones most people trash up. Previously I've hunted here a lot because it is one of the closest parks to me, I've only found 2 wheat pennies to date. Today was a different story. Decided to try out the settings I've heard about, D2 audio, disc of 16, sensitivity at full bore, ground balance 65. Within 5 minutes of changing settings I pulled my first silver for the day, 1947 rosie. About a foot away I dug a 1942 merc. A short while later I hit the 1937 buffalo (deep chopping 90 VDI, wierd), then I hit the 1917 merc. Everything was deep, 7-8 inches. I couldn't be happier! :)

So here's the proof that no place is ever 'hunted out'.

Thanks for sharing your settings. I appreciate that, and am thrilled that you use my favorite Audio Tone function ... d2 ... with success. I do like to use d4 when conditions are in my favor, but I get a bit deeper and better all-around audio results with the d2 audio.

I hope that old park kicks out a few more oldies for you.

Hey Monte,

Congrats! I see these photos being a confirmation of all that you post here! Glad you had that success, it might be more rewarding to find those coins where you did. It was a hunted out spot, but not a "Monte hunted out spot". :heh:

A couple of questions for you regarding your hunt.

1. Using your 5" coil, how long would you say it takes you to hunt a given area? e.g a 10ft X 10ft block. I wonder if I go slow enough through an area with my 11"DD but know the 5" requires more patience.

2. We've spoken about the modes before. I, like you, prefer d2 but I notice that with d4 I can often quite easily hear the clarity of a beep so much easier than the modulation of the d2 mode. I always check my targets in d4 after finding them in d2 mode. And then I use pinpoint to get a feel for the targets shape. Even something 5" or 6" deep that is longer than it is wide, is pretty easy to spot. What do you listen for (at different depths) with the d2 mode compared with the d4 mode? I know this might be a very subtle thing as our ears get better the more we use them and also by how closely we listen. What are you listening for in particular with d2? I am trying to train my ears better and if I have a better idea of what to listen to, that would help.

Thanks so much

I just try to help others enjoy the sport. His success isn't because of my posts, I'm sure, but it's nice to see we like similar selections.

I have hunted many "well hunted" or "heavily worked" or "picked over" sites, but unless it's a small sized spot that I have totally cleaned ALL targets from, there isn't really a 'worked out" spot. Oh, there are a few places I have had access to that I scoured well, and they were small (a small vacant lot for example) that I really won't return to because through the years I use to work new models there, in both the Disc. and All Metal modes and they were clean. No good stuff and they had little Iron which I had removed. Most sites, however, are just well hunted, but not hunted out. Heck, my favorite ghost town I first hunted on may 4th of '69, and really concentrated on from '83 thru '98, but it's large and very trashy, and the brush and wild grasses change year to year, and others have hunted it too. It's very thinned down, but it's not close to being clean. Too much junk and still some good Seated Liberties, a few Barbers, some IH and 2

Hi there,

where do you live in Germany? Are you British or American? Nice finds you made lately:thumbup:

Good you see you here! So, after all those medical problems in the past you fell off a ladder last june. But good that you are so strong and recover all the the time.
I just purchased a Delta 4000 with extra 5 incher. I am a but tired of swinging the heavy machines and want something light now. Hope it does good for me here in the Netherlands.

Best regards, Eric. Holland.

It's harvest time for canabis now, but most of the harvesting is done by the police :crylol:

Well, I guess it's the same here. A lot of old copper coins and some field a good chance on Roman and medieval stuff. I am close from the German border in the south of the Netherlands by the way. If you are planning driving up here once, then just give me a shout and we could meet up.

HH, Eric.

Monte, Smooth - My apologies. I thought Monte started this thread. Congrats to you smooth and thanks again for the great info Monte.
