Ok Guys I have the Omega for a week end???

What do you do when you push the GB button and all it does is high pitch chatter?? I tried putting the coil in other spots. I was thinking maybe I should have shut it off? I walked from the beach 30' to the tot lot and tried to GB in the tot lot. I was in disc mode. Sens @60, Disc @40? just enough to disc out iron? D4 tones. Thanks for the help. Happy Trails......Z

We're fortunate that the Omega provides us with both an 'automated' Ground Grab function as well the Manual Ground Balance functions. I know there's a comment in the T2 manual but missed it in the Omega Owner's Manual regarding the low-reading ground environments. Maybe this will help.

So, you were on some beach sand, but I am not sure what beach or what the general Ground Phase read-out would be for the dry sand or nearby adjacent ground. Then you went o the Tot Lot but is it also beach sand or is it wood-chip or ???

The Ground Grab of the Omega and Gamma, like the Fast Grab of the T2, does a very good job of automated ground balance over more iron mineralized ground that has a modest to higher Ground Phase read-out. By that I mean something from the 50's or higher on the Omega, and even a bit below. However, when the Ground Phase read-out is too low for the Omega or Gamma or T2 to auto-balance to, you need to manually adjust the Ground Balance to get the best overall performance.

If adjusting these models you press the touch pad or flip the toggle while bobbing the search coil from about 6"-8" down to about

Hi Z, I am sending you a pm with a link to the user manual, you can download it & read it over. Steve.

Thanks guys happy someone replied... Monte it was from sand to wood chips. Ok I guess all I did was got the ground phase. Once I have the correct ground phase I go to AT and turn the sens so I get a hum push GG button, pump coil until numbers levels out than I can go to disc mode and hunt. This procedure is done when ground conditions change? When I change sens and disc settings from At to disc mode I assume the detector is still GBed and I am just changing the settings for the detector to operate at max or what ever level I want to run the detector at?
Thank you very much for your patience and kindness... Happy Trails ....Z

I GB my Omega 80% of the time in the Discriminate mode. You can't hear the threshold audio as if adjusted in 'AT' but you can see the proper Ground Phase read-out responding just fine. Yes, when I hunt in All Metal or opt to check things that way I might double-check the Ground Phase setting, but it can happen either way. I'm referring to the Omega. With the Gamma you have to scroll from Disc. to All Metal to Ground Grab and, when I listened briefly this afternoon, it sounded like it was accomplished in the All Metal mode.

Anyway, yes, better or best to GB in All Metal, but it's also doable in the Disc. mode with the Omega.

With the Omega it is suggested that you locate a site that seems free of metal.

Next, as with many/most Ground Balancing models, you select the All Metal mode which is the AT (for Auto-Tuned All Metal) selection and adjust for a 'proper' Threshold or slight audio hum. That is accomplished using the Sensitivity control of the Omega. The AT mode is the deepest-seeking mode and therefore is set to0 achieve the most "sensitivity" possible. Thus, this control now functions to establish the Threshold, audio in this 'mode.' Depending upon your personal hearing, the headphones in use, the surrounding ambient noise, etc., the setting will be very close to '70'. Some like it at about '68' or '69' and others might need a little higher, such as '71' or '72,' but it's very close to '70.'

Now you will need to use the Ground Grab touch-pad and hold it while you pump the search coil a few times. it usually only takes about 4-5 seconds to briskly bob the search coil from about 6" to 8" high down to about

WARNING! WARNING!! If your going to teach a old dog new tricks make sure you know where your feet are planted. You could end up with a wet leg....
Ok I kind of feel like a test pilot. I am sure someone will tell me to fasten my helmet on and prepare for a ride of my life.
Thanks Monte and Jim. This is going to be an adventure of good finds and happy times. Maybe a little swearing thrown in once and awhile. Will certainly let you know what happens today. Thanks again and Happy Trails...Z

Thanks Monte for the help. I can see why you like d2. I used it for the entire hunt and it is easier to get used to. I set disc at 1 and ran that for entire hunt. Those low sounds and those squeals are kind of easy to follow with the pennies coming in at maybe a click/ flat tone. Thanks it made the hunting more enjoyable. I did GB 3 times. I watched the numbers on the lower right and the bars on the lower left. Ground numbers 81 were on and they went to 84 so I figured that was enough change to GB again. Then they went to 87 so did it again, I plan on going hunting tomorrow so will post results tomorrow. It was a very pleasant hunt thanks to you guys. Happy Trails..... Jerry

Gad what a quiet detector. I kept swinging the detector at the sand scoop to see if it was working. I ran in Disc mode. Thanks to all, especially Monte for his detailed help. Even an old dog like me got it. I ran Sens@90 (I am a chicken. I am sure it could have gone higher) Disc @1, d2 Tone. I am surprised at the number of coins close to junk that this detector could give you a chance to pick up. With some practice one could really get good with it. Very easy detector to use. Fun detector. I do have to change my hunting procedures though because, you can go a long, long distance with out stopping to check as many targets. I covered a lot of area going slower than with the F70 because I wasn't stopping to recheck targets. Saturday I ended up with sore arm from swinging for 4 hours with no breaks but to dig targets. Dug a lot of junk because I digging everything that gave a good signal even if the meter was jumping all over the place. I got in about 14 hours of detecting in with the Omega this weekend. I only went to one beach and 3 different parks with it. It worked good on wet sand and dry sand even at Sens@90. In the parks it did well but I only had the 10" coil on it so really wasn't getting close to metal poles. It did a fine job even with the wrong coil on it. Thank you again guys for making it an enjoyable hunt this weekend... Happy Trails.......Z
PS Just counted coins and I had 67...

Jim most of my finds are surface finds. 3"to5" area. I dug one quarter that was down more than, maybe 7". I can't get down on me knees so I can only guess. I usually put the handle of the sand scoop down in the hole to measure but didn't do that. With my eye sight the way it is I am ready to go to work for the government because I can't tell if it is an inch or 7 inches by looking at it now. Maybe I'll be able to get one of those jobs where I can spend one term and get a $70,000 a year retirement?
Thanks Jim and Happy Trails.....Z

I hear you on the Govt. job!!! As far as depth, most good coin finds are in the 3-5" depth range, so when one might actually be 4-6" it just looks so deep that it MUST BE 8 OR 9," RIGHT.:bouncy:Thanks, HH jim tn
