OK. here is THE HEADLINE...EXCAL NUT!

Gulf Hunter

Active member
I am the new owner of an Excal 1000. Today was her maiden voyage to the lane. I went to about the trashiest beach I could find at 4am. Was nervous and unsure of this monster, but trusting my fellow pirate mates you know who you are. Well this is what I ended up with. At least I'm finding something. The ferrous nails mainly came to hand while scooping pull tabs. It sure is nice when you KNOW you are over a nail bed and those pesky suckers are just hushin' up, I LIKE IT! Still love my Sea Hunter Mark II, but needed some ferrous masking. I got it. Quit around 830am for work.

Well, if you found that stuff, GH, then the good stuff will come. I just got mine too and first time out found about $2.50 clad, .925 toe ring and a 2" section of a tiny .925 chain with clasp. A nickel and quarter came out of the same hole over a foot down. Not much but good finds will come. Some other junk too but really liked the Excal, had searched this section a few days before and found only a couple of coins. Only thing I don't like is the low growl after nulling over ferrous. In trashy areas it's annoying. I did get a straight shaft and that really helps with the balance/weight issue. Getting ready to take for 2nd time in a few minutes. We are starting minus tides today and by the first of the week should be -1.0 ft. Have a great weekend and hope you dig some great targets.

GH,
I have been hunting with the Excal since 97, I have found some nice finds with it over the years as you can see........good luck with your new machine & HH.

Thanks for the reply, Bottomfeeder. Today I actually noticed it even more pronounced. Seems like all my threshold wanted to do was a low buzz. I got worried and called Minelab. Talked with a guy name Robert, the Excal specialist there. We talked for awhile and I told him what was going on. He said that the threshold will hold different tones depending on what the coil passed over last until it passes over something different. Well, since this beach was recently renourished and is loaded with junk I guess that explains the problem. I tried what you suggested but it immediately went back to the low buzz because the junk is evidently everywhere. Did another little test in my backyard after talking with Robert and he's right. Plan to get out to another beach in the next couple of days and test it there, shouldn't be so much junk. Just wanted to post this in case any other new Excal owners are experiencing similar things. Anyway, all I found was a .925 earing, silver plated ring, and about 70 cents in clad. Even with the junk and low buzzing threshold I was still able to find targets. That's reasurring. This machine does go deep and is for sure worth the effort to learn. Thanks again for your help and have a great weekend.
